I like this because 1) you're not waiting for a reaction to your compliment, and 2) asking if she has a bf is a direct opener that's socially accepted at the same time. You're making your intent clear from the beginning. I like the follow up joke for when she says "Yes, I have a bf", but did you try it without the joke after a girl said "No, I don't have a bf"?
