Imo yes equivalent. Where things get interesting is where the perspective lies. Your statement is true from a top-down sort of perspective, but from the perspective of one of the players without knowing how the other will choose, it becomes hard to recommend cooperating 100% of the time. There are lots of studies on different iterated prisoners dilemma strategies & tournaments etc etc regarding what strategies come out on top. An example might be "Cooperate until someone else doesn't, then never…

Agree with your first steelman - ppl are often too complex/self-unaware to even know what they themselves want or to predict what others want. Also have a go at researching the prisoners' dilemma, there's loads of material out there about cooperation or not given the inability to know the other person's choice.

There are loads of words in this post whose interpretations are the sorts of things that divorces and marriages hinge upon. Its near trivial for any spouse to find a therapist that agrees with them. One person's small blip is another's core issue. While I agree using children against each other isn't great, there's all kinds of post divorce stuff that can harm a kid. Step parents, different place to live sucks for them, a father might get even -further- swept up in their career, family relations…

Big issue here is how emotional disposition seriously changes how things read to people. Attraction from one bolded thing can easily flip all sorts of stuff into reading as the other things.

"Typical" adulting is fucking boring - it's extremely easy to mix up leaning into adulthood longer term with stuff that's unattractive. There's no real way to tell where peoples interpretations & tipping points are until real life shit happens like career burnouts or addictions developing or cancerous parents or whatever. Who knows how many people are suffering in silence because their relationship looks to themselves & friends like its "healthy".

nope, both cases were well into ltr and there was much discussion - these weren't 1 night stands

The RP definition of winners you seem to be trying to surface here is rooted in the idea of genetic success because many of it's foundational tenets are based on how experienced emotions are reflective of evolutionary pressures (in theory - I'm, just red-splaining here). In short, -can- you be loved & wanted by a woman if you're option 1 guy at all? RP worldiew is generally no. Imagine Option 1 guy's life (even still including all that other awesome stuff) spent getting nipped at by a joyless …

now you've got me -really- curious; what's the distinction as you see it?

For sure - where it gets interesting for me is that rationality is a garbage in garbage out process that's entirely shaped by purpose and intention and perspective. That is as opposed to being a capacity that people have to just, see the truth. For me understanding all the "extra rational" landscape is super important for separating capability from intent. Explaining gender differences in terms other than capability. Or why that super smart person did that super dumb 'looking' thing that time th…

I feel like the most likely answer here is either simple ignorance of the mechanics and/or the flimsiness of "rationality". I've been with extremely educated women in their 30s who have displayed staggering dismissal of contraceptive success rates in the heat of the moment. anecdotal examples of extremes on either side (royal you): you're in charge of lawyering out billion dollar mergers and a lifelong childfree die hard but the the calendar method's rock solid? or on the other extreme I'm prett…

Anecdotally true - have experienced women (die hard childfree professional types) being startlingly cavalier about contraception if they're into me and others insisting on condom on top of the pill within LTRs when not (strikes & gutters man). Never really saw the other way round.

Man all this has me reminiscing over my time at Springer Nature (and BiomedCentral) working on their open-access platforms Wish good data was more available to the world than it is. I love that The Conversation is nonprofit and the slogan is awesome. It's alarmingly looking at that paternity stuff without burning inside - it's amazing how scripted and automatic the internal monologue is - nearly (ironically) robotic, and how easy it is to be caught up in it unaware. I find it bittersweet how sma…

I dunno my takeaway from 500 days of Summer, Hitchhikers guide, and Almost Famous, is that boring guy doesn't get the girl, and MPDG dislike is generally garden variety dislike for male rumination on romantic failure. Sometimes I think the media doth protest too much with how hard they ascribe intended responsibility to MPDGs. I feel like it wouldn't be such a big deal to people confident and happy in their own ability to bring some fun & adventure to the table.

Ok what a ride! So I was really surprised by the mind reading thing being software. What's even more interesting territory to me is that there seems to be some sort of knowable landscape in terms of its development. I think this operating system vs app level will be a super useful distinction as we learn more and more in this direction. If only there were some framework we could use to learn about how these apps form, travel and get installed... (looks over in the corner, sees memetics continuin…

God damn its refreshing to see someone out there seeing the false dichotomy - that shit can't die fast enough afaic. I'm biased as my bg is in systems thinking so, you know, stuff matching my worldview is obviously Good™. I'm no scholar I just use this stuff for work but I'm always looking for any nonreductive viewpoints out there that can help scope our thinking.

No idea what neo-behaviouralist tradition or the SSSM is but I def want to take any straw I can out of my perspective - there some material you can suggest?

For sure some people care more about the status than the thing - applies to both genders about a lot of things. FSM points definitely matter but pretty sure that varies quite a bit between women and type of relationship. I think the useful thing is to watch individuals to get a sense of how much it seems to matter.

While you're not wrong about what your arguing against, I'd offer a more useful way of looking 'gendered nature' is as one voice in the chorus of any given person's being, which can be roughly understood enough to help you deal with them. Have a read of 'The Blank Slate' by Steven Pinker - It's a great deep dive into the whole nature nurture thing in far greater scope than simply gender, though there is a chapter in there. From the nonrandom way we pick up language to the effects WWII and Civi…

Honestly think it may be the -lite- part that's screwing you. Say what you will about those dudes in the pics but they are committed. Usually ppl fully decked out like that in a subculture are going to be at least socially connected and can be relied upon to know what's going on in a scene. Also a thing about hipsters is so much of the schtick is drenched in radar-jamming "irony" that not seeing what's underneath is a little mysterious. In addition to the general bohemian lean towards creativity…

Fuck yeah I would - being former goth (rivet-head actually) I totally did anyway but this would have saved a lot of strain on my family relationships back on the farm. Besides it wouldn't be about smoothing up my complexion as showing some fucking creativity. Went clubbing for new years and was taken aback at how hard it is to find some decent gunmetal nail polish.

Exposure desensitizes. Failure is no exception, you can see it in careers, sports, both genders with different things. Abundance only gives you so many freebies before doubt & fear start kicking in. Something something fear leads to anger...

Yeah totally agree about the individual differences there but that sort of thing is exactly what's lost in the "compression" of allcaps hyperbolic sloganeering as a method for carrying the ideas. I don't think I or maybe anyone could say the omelet isn't worth the broken eggs but considering RP candidates tend to be starting from a point of pedestalizing and locused in their own deficiency, we're definitely looking at a nontrivial amount of that going on. That sort of thing's not specific to RP …

Personally I'd say AWALT, shit tests, oldest teenager in the house etc are wide open to an interpretation that all that shit that annoys you is just women being women so why waste your time on a unicorn hunt instead of just sacking up & not letting that shit get to you? I mean, if you're on a journey of passing through suffering now for the gain later, why wouldn't getting over that lack of enjoyment be just another piece of yourself to work on? Wouldn't noping out of that relationship just be g…

Anything you do about an emotion -is- expressing it. Even if just coming home from work and talking about the nail isn't an option like it seems to be for a lot of women for whatever reason. There are lots of options available beyond that - even if some are technically expressing by voice; changing things through conversation isn't not action in the same way writing isn't just typing... Couple examples might be: Setting up a talk with an adjacent team at work. "Hey our requests for the thing f…
