Hell, positive reinforcement was almost unheard of before I left home, but that was because my mum was afraid she'd make me proud (one of the seven deadly sins ohnoez). Still is rare to get reinforcement that doesn't feel manipulative to me.

I mostly agree, except the discrimination in IT one - I have personally seen, and I've heard second hand from women, horrible attitudes towards women, and I think that has successfully given IT a bad rep, which can lead to women not wanting to work in an industry represented by pigs. If someone doesn't have your DNA, it's impossible to use it to their advantage. If the government want yours badly (e.g. get it through dodgy means and use it), it's likely going to be complicated to use in court. These things provide a barrier to them just doing whatever they want.
