I would be very careful about this. Cops are not judges. I'm not a lawyer, but some quick googleness brought me this for Virginia "close-in-age" exceptions: "The second statute deals with someone 18 years of age or older having sex with someone age 15, 16, or 17 years of age, which is a class one misdemeanor and punishable with up to one year in jail and a $2,500.00 fine." Don't risk your future.

I must interject regarding the birth control v. viagra part. It's just not very accurate: http://www.factcheck.org/2008/07/mccains-viagra-moment/ According to this (admittedly old) fact check, 86% of insurance plans covered birth control, compared to ~50% covering Viagra. Further, the Affordable Care Act provides guarantees for birth control coverage, and none for Viagra (or even vasectomies... separate issue...(edit) on second thought, no its not). That's not to say that there are not legitimat…

What exactly are peoples' issue with the Lilly Ledbetter Act? All it does is extend the statute of limitations on wage lawsuits. There's truly nothing about it that's anti-male. I mean . . . I guess you could be against it on tort reform grounds, but that's something unrelated to gender.

A lot of this is not slut-shaming per se, although it is all sexual shaming - I think that's a decent umbrella term. It's all bad. Pretty simple: don't shame people for their sexuality or their sex lives, period.

I've made a few donations to Planned Parenthood (screw Komen), does that count? He could have just, ya know, just asked for donations instead of the accusatory "bet you wont do anything about this". Was the point of that post actually to raise money for a DV shelter or was it just to create material for this post? I'm pretty sure it was the latter. That post sucked and by proxy this post sucks.

Honestly, I think this is a decent article you have written, much better than your pro-shaming catalogue. A lot of things I would agree with, such as the idea of a "Leave it to beaver" masculinity and the loss of that leaving a gap to a mode of traditional masculinity. Here's where you fall off the tracks though: So you get this group of men, again, mostly white, mostly middle class, who feel that they're deserved something that has been denied to them. And what's being denied to them isn't just…

I don't think the feminist movement, to the extent a unified feminist movement exists, has a single position on circumcision. Yeah, and that's a problem. When did bodily autonomy become negotiable?

I'm not sure how many MRAs think ONLY men have disadvantages, but more that both sides have issues to address. I think a lot, though, will disagree that they have the same root causes (this attitude implies mens' issues are already being dealt with, which strikes a lot of men as hollow). Kyriarchy, and more to the point - Intersectionality are under-utilized concepts in ye old gender wars. Patriarchy does not exist independently in the real world - privileges come from all different places, not …

For that to happen, the focus of the conversation needs to change from talking aabout negative male traits to talking about, and reinforcing, positive male traits. That discussion simply does not take place right now.

So one side wants to stop genital cutting for one gender. The other side wants to stop genital cutting for both genders. Tell me again, which one is sexist...err, "prejudiced on the basis of gender"? I get the whole point about not derailing topics, when it is a topic that doesn't affect you, but if it affects everyone, and you only talk about one side, I'm going to call you on your exclusionary bullshit.

It's been 14 years since my kidneys failed. During that time, most of which I spent on dialysis, I've built a career, built an independent life and never collected a single red cent of from disability, despite qualifying (I could have "retired" at 21). I find shit like this to be Profoundly insulting.

The article actually seems to get that "man flu" is an insult, but then misses the point after that. Author asks "is this a feminist issue?". How can it not be? The author acknowledges this is based on gender stereotypes. One of Feminism's big things is dismantling those. But this author (and they are not alone) requires "proof" of misogyny before accepting it as a valid feminist issue.

I take public transit almost everywhere (staunch urbanite) and work on the 17th floor. It's buses and elevators all over the place! It's very blatant on the bus, and it sucks. I get unfriendly looks, or at least someone who chooses to stand rather than sit next to me, most days (these buses are packed like sardine cans). I pretty much spend that time reading a book and try not to take it personally.

I agree with you. The problem becomes that people are people are trying to defend the word "marriage" from some peoples' pesky civil rights. There's a lot of people that feel that a separate but equal term would be ok. Personally, I feel it would be kind of a silly governmental exercise to have two institutions that perform the same function simply to let some people feel better about the word. Plus, "Separate but equal" has never really worked well. Removing the government from the marriage gam…

Oh please. This is the principle concept of insurance. All insurance systems exist by pooling together funds together with other people to mitigate risk. The people who cost less end up paying for the people that cost more. If you don't believe in that concept, you don't believe in the general concept of insurance (I have a couple of friends that hold that view, and that's fine). If you want to talk about the problems with this, talk about how male birth control options and vasectomies are not c…

I don't think "tradition" works as a legal argument. Otherwise you could never change anything. Besides, the word "marriage" is just a word. If it was called "dfjdfjkdflkdfs", but limited to hetero-ness, the same civil rights argument would be going on, in that everyone should have equal access.

Well, there is an issue where if a same-sex couple lives in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage, then they cannot even GET divorced (for example, if a NY couple relocates to Philly, or just drove to Manhattan to get married). Just one reason why I think "states' rights" is a bad idea with regards to marriage.

Good job Home Depot on pulling some shitty stereotyping of, well, everyone. This is probably a misguided attempt to appeal more to women like pink pic pens or underpowered pink laptops. You are a man and want to grow a garden? Nah, here's how you can refinish some cabinets. You are a woman and want to refinish cabinets? How about you go play with flowers instead. EVERYONE is gonna have a field day with this.

This acknowledges the issue of rape affecting everyone. Great! +5 justice points! But the "imagine if I was a woman" quip serves no purpose except basically say "I was raped, but at least I wasn't victim blamed" which suggests it was somehow "less bad". -4 justice points. Plus, didn't we deal with this just a few months ago? http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4670780/university-bans-male-students-from-drag.html

Try being bi. A majority of women will call that an absolute dealbreaker (either its gross, its unmanly, or you actually are just gay and in denial). This is a big factor for many bi-guys that choose to remain closeted. It's exhausting how so much of het-male attractiveness seems to be tied up in macho-manly-masculinity. It would be nice to be able to pursue my interests without worrying about how 'attractive' they are. Can't you just judge me by my looks or something?

Its great to see something focused truly on male victims! One thing that is weird, though, is that they say In the U.S., 15% of domestic violence victims are men. That is over 45 million victims each year. That figure is from the Bureau of Justice and based on reported incidences. Then right below that they have a section on how male victims under-report.

Gotta love that word game. Ok, fine - what is the word that means "prejudiced against a person on the basis of race", when power is not in place? Oh, what's that? There isn't one? English has over 600,000 words, but none that simply means prejudice on the basis of race? That seems rather ungood . . . I pretty much dislike everything about this situation though. People's jobs getting canned because of overzealous peoples sense of interweb social justice is just bad all around.

"If he calls the police, studies have shown that there’s an 80% chance that he’ll be arrested" Does anyone know a source for this statement. I know there was a study done in 1985 which showed men being 3 times more likely to be the arrested party when they call the police, but that's practically obsolete (it was a U.S. study pre-VAWA).

I think you have the idea of masculism (as a movement) backward. Breaking down traditionally imposed male-gender roles is a huge thing to me (I absolutely rail against terms like "man up", "real men", etc). Even very progressive minded people do this and don't even realize it (take Eve Ensler's quote on the "passivity of good men", for example, where she basically calls men complicit for failing to live up to gender role: "man as protector"). There needs to be better awareness about male gender …

This hits soooo close to home for me. When we were young, my father faught for and won full custody over my mother, who has schizophrenia. When I turned 8, during visitation, she kidnapped my me and my brother. She hid us with some people in a house in the center of Crip turf in Inglewood, Ca. This was probably about a year before the L.A. riots. Neckbeard is a common SRS slur; I'm sure it was just a coincidence... I have trouble getting my head around how noun+noun can equal "socially retarded person with severe delusions regarding his own importance, his sexual appeal and how the female brain works" through pure translation (although I don't speak norwegian - could you provide the original norwegian term(s) you are trying to translate so we can understand?) Also, "retarded" is ableist.

"The house in which Men’s Alternative Safe House was based – Silverman’s home – has now been sold. He says he will still provide a pull-out bed at his condominium for any men who need it. He will also continue to operate the men’s helpline." The guy's house. This is what male ipv victims get - spare space in some guy's house. Until the house is sold, that is. Even if someone believes the incorrect idea that "95% of IPV victims are female", how could this this fair to the remaining "5%" demograph…

You might want to add something about male birth control funding. In the U.S., new insurance mandates do not guarantee any male birth control (vasecomies are not guaranteed under "Obamacare") and the funding issues slowing RISUG development (it's relying on crowdsourcing at this point and the Gates Foundation gave money, but only for research as a female birth control option).

This statement has so many flaws. First, it assumes homophobia is a male-gendered thing (apparently all the conservative bible-beating women have died off), and that homophobia is a man's natural state. Second, it basically takes the attitude that male sexuality, hetero or homo, is predatory by default. Lastly, it's totally co-opting a core LGBT issue (homophobia) and making it about hetero women. To quote one of the commenters: "As a gay man, I hate this line of thought, it assumes all gays are…

The framing of this whole debate is wrong. The issue at hand is the shaming of sexuality. Limiting it to finding a male equivalent to the word "slut" is asking you to compare apples to oranges and only succeeds in limiting the scope of the argument to score points. Terms like slut, creep, whore, skank, womanizer, "neckbeard virgin loser" are all ways to engage in sexuality shaming. It is hypocritical to view some of these as ok and others as not. Just don't go around shaming people of any gender…

Child Custody: The Tender Years doctrine said women are naturally better for raising children and was a major victory for early women's groups. I guess those women's rights groups really hated women, eh? Legal Circumcision: (I'd love to hear how this could be construed as misogyny, as I have no idea) This is all moot though. You are left with one of two choices: A. Acknowledge men have their own issues, and should advocate to address them, or that B. it actually IS a result of misogyny and femin…
