Statistically, a lot of things happen. But it's misleading. It depends on the people and circumstances involved. We're not identical showroom dummies who can be treated as if we have the same motivations and standards for behavior.

That is beyond retarded. Every single "victims" group on earth has one "oppressor" they blame for absolutely everything. Courts favor women in divorce cases because men are styled as the "oppressor," and women vote. In droves. The result, ladies, is that men are planning for divorce before the marriage even starts. Welcome to the era of the pre-nup, a.k.a. you get nothing because you signed a contract more binding than marriage.

Gun laws and gun rights are very closely related. I don't believe in "rights." It's an outdated concept. Have fun killing people for making mistakes (or having a medical condition) Uninvited people in my house die in a hail of bullets, and my family is safe.

What one have to do with the other? Just because someone thinks that it's a bad idea to shoot first and ask questions later, doesn't mean they're opposed to gun rights. Why are you talking about gun rights? I'm talking about gun laws, including the ability to shoot some drunk irresponsible idiot if he breaks into your house. If I don't shoot him for breaking into my house, and he goes on to run over your family, you'll finally understand the metaphor.

Not true in most states. Open to interpretation in the courts. If they're going to tell me I should endanger my family for the "rights" of some criminal asshole, I'm going to make a fuss -- and challenge that law in court as unconstitutional.

Would you consider using rubber bullets or another form of non-lethal, but nearly equally as effective way of neutralizing the intruder? Only if it were 100% neutralizing like a .45 to the skull. Family comes first. Their "rights" (which do not exist in nature), second. I remember Norway as a pleasant (but freezing) place with some ugly neighborhoods in the downtown, like in the USA. If I lived there, I would bisect intruders with a Viking axe!

I think if I were living in a college dorm room, in a very managed environment, I might be less clear on this. However, out here in the increasingly chaotic world, there are no safe places (bad guys have cars). Thus I think more about the bottom line: ensuring my family is safe. I don't really care what happens to the other guy, unless he is 100% innocent, which no uninvited person in my home can be (let's say, for sake of argument, that he's 51% innocent).

People have been sued for killing a scumbag breaking into their house because the criminal's family have proven that they would suffer financially from the loss of income from the criminal's drug business. That would really suck, but I'll defend my family and then use criminal law to defend my actions as non-negligent in civil court. If it goes badly, oh well: family still alive and unraped.

This means that if someone comes at you with a knife in your home if you stab them you'll be fine, but you won't be if you shoot them. That's ludicrous. While I mostly agree, the assumption is that the guy is just entered, is confused, not threatening anyone and is merely in need of assistance and redirection rather than an arbitrary death sentence. If someone is confused, not threatening anyone and merely in need of assistance and redirection and yet wanders out in front of a bus, he still dies. Incompetence and ignorance are no excuses.

If someone breaks into your home; you are not safe, neither is your family and you aren't required to retreat further. Shoot intruder. There is no way to achieve a better outcome. Once the intrusion happens, you are on the defensive, and need to put your family first, above airy "moral" principles that men who sit to pee seem to like.

My roommate gets drunk and stumbles into the house next door to ours, which looked nearly identical to his drunken mind. Had our neighbors been gun-crazed maniacs with every single license you can obtain, they could have shot him in the skull for entering their unlocked house. No sympathy for his irresponsible behavior. You seem to neglect to mention that he could have scared them half to death.

it most certainly should be legal to shoot someone who breaks into your house, regardless of their intentions. Of course: that's pure common sense, which is why most people are afraid of it. If they are not invited in, they don't have any right to be there, and you should be able to shoot them dead to eliminate a possible threat to your family, and to convince future idiots that burglary and home invasion are bad hobbies. It's not like we're hurting for criminals. We have plenty. A few lost here…
