I've had both male and female gyn or ob/gyn and am fortunate enough to have been happy with them. I was actually disappointed when my male ob/gyn retired because he was very professional and always listened and never rushed me. It actually surprised me that I was ok with a male, but maybe the fact that most females probably prefer females make it more competitive for them.
