Leslie Feinburg's book Stone Butch Blues dives into this. It's loosely based on her life and tells the story of a butch lesbian in the late 50s/60s who at one point transitions FTM and lives as a man, but eventually stops taking hormones partially due to how isolating it was to be a man. I think this depends HIGHLY on location. I used to live in a large US city, in the top five population-wise. When I was living in a yuppie sort of neighborhood in that city close to a sports stadium, college campus, and a popular bar area men would yell something vulgar, follow me for a block or so, or just aggressively try to get me to stop and talk to them at least once or twice a month.
