This is a rather alarmist article. It's actually not clear that oral HPV-related carcinomas have increased much at all in men. What has changed, is that we now know to look for HPV in cases of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. What would previously have been classified as a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma to a cervical lymph node with no known primary site, can now be worked up for HPV and, if found positive, tonsillar biopsies can be performed to find the primary site. my understanding is that boys do better when in same gender classes regardless of the teaching style. Simply segregating boys and girls causes both groups to perform better. I can't understand why public schools aren't already doing this.

The author complains that the middle class women and models are in a weaker position when approaching the fat cats that attend these parties. But she utterly fails to realize that middle class men don't even have a seat at the table. However unequal the power is in these interactions, the fact is that these women are being given an opportunity that would never be handed to any young man.

This is the height of entitlement. Imagine the backlash against a male medical student complaining that his position as a future doctor didn't guarantee him a fertile dating life? Women are so accustomed to having no responsibilities in romantic relationships that if things aren't going their way, then it must be sexism.

And one last thing. . . Why does it matter that Janet is "Just a college student." After all, Jose is "Just a guy who hasn't even completed high school." If anything, Janet is probably his intellectual and economic superior. Why was he so easily able to 'trick' her into getting pregnant. Sounds like both of the parties acted like morons, and both of them are suffering the consequences of their actions.

I had plenty of friends (both men and women) who completed medical school just fine while raising children. A few of whom were single parents with no family support. Jose sounds like a dick. But I don't think the story gives Janet enough credit. Why wasn't she using birth control? Why didn't she insist on an actual method of contraception? Why didn't call Jose out when he poked holes in his condom? The fact is that THEY got Janet pregnant. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to hear that Jose got what he deserved. I just don't think Janet is the passive victim this story makes her out to be.

This is so terrible. With some medical training, and some time working in a medical examiner's office, it's pretty easy to read between the lines. She stepped on his stomach hard enough to cause internal bleeding, and then left him in the tub with hot water running. The child was drowning in water hot enough to burn his skin. Very simply, the infant was tortured and murdered. And they're charging her with manslaughter. . . seems fair.

Yes, definitely go to the police. Even if they don't do anything this time (and they very well may not), at least there will be the police report. If she pulls this kind of crap again with someone else, they might take the second offense more seriously thanks to you.

I think I'd add the education gap to the list. Nothing gets me angrier than seeing all of the hand wringing over why adult women are choosing not to go into certain STEM fields, while elementary-school-aged boys are being denied the basic skills they need to be successful in any field.

Amen. So many people fret that women are shoehorned into jobs like nursing. But those are high paying, stable, well respected jobs. I'm pretty sure I know a few unemployed men who wouldn't mind being shoehorned into a similar position.

When I was still a medical student I heard the director of the nursing program of a nearby college say, in a public forum no less, that women were better nurses because they were naturally more caring. The sexism in that comment should have curled the toenails of both men and women, but nobody batted an eye.
