In highly competitive markets which is how most markets are excluding telecom, soda etc., even small advantages in operating costs translate into a substantial competitive edge. There is no reason for companies in such fields to employ men if it is true that you can pay 70 cents to the dollar for a female employee. In fact it would be stupid to employ men if there is no difference in skills or output.

Hey man, at least you don't have mandatory seating for women here in the US. Back home, they reserve a certain portion for women, and you can get slapped for sitting on those seats. And then, you see that women will board the bus and occupy the general seats, and then the men have to stand even though if the women moved to their reserved seats everyone in the bus can sit. Bus journeys can take 1-2 hours at times.

For many women it is more along the lines of "I give that look to people who I think are malicious and hence are making me uncomfortable" I have seen the unease that women display by my mere presence in say a metro station at night. I am no rapist, in fact I am one of those who likes to avoid any sort of contact with women. If on the other hand I was acting shady and say staring at them then it would be justified.
