8	Insurers cannot charge different premiums to men and women because of their gender, the European Court of Justice has ruled. It would be more acceptable to charge higher health premiums for smokers because that's something people can chose to do, and chose to stop. Not to say it's easy to stop, but they have choice over it. You're born a man or woman, there's nothing you can do about it. It's like being white or black. That's the point: you can't make categories on that basis. The bottom line is that you can't claim to be for true fairness between genders if you support discrimination in the insurance calculations here. I understand completely what insurance is about, and I'd say pretty much every other category they base your rates on are just fine (tickets, accidents, DUI arrests, etc.). There are trends with regard to racial background, for example. Imagine the (correctly so) rage if certain skin colours paid different rates than others due to statistics on risk.
