Oh yes sorry, just to clarify I do have an invite out to her already that I’m waiting to hear back on wrt her schedule. (Although it’s for a holiday event, not necessarily something like just grabbing dinner where it would be easy to bring it up naturally in conversation in person. Which is why, paired with like you said not wanting dating app guy to beat me, I was going to just ask to consider that a date if she does accept the invite.) It’s just difficult to nail things down since she has mult…

Fair enough! I was thinking of asking beforehand if she would want to consider whatever our next thing is a date since we don’t see each other irl super often any more and there might be someone else in the picture as well (she mentioned someone she’s talking to on a dating app, but it’s really unclear what “talking” means in this case/how far along it is — could mean they’ve texted a little bit but he’s the second choice so she’s letting me know I need to act or miss my chance, or it could mean…

That’s all fair. I think the friendship can survive as long as I navigate it well tbh (you can recover from asking someone out and being chill if it’s a no; not so much if you confess your undying love). We don’t see each other irl super often any more (they’re in grad school at a different college now and have multiple jobs) which does make it a little more challenging both to ask and to bounce back from but I’ll figure something out. Perhaps next time we have plans set up I’ll just ask if she …

Ah, for sure. That makes sense. How do you recommend handling it? I want to ask out my friend soon because there have been some sort of mixed signals but I think I'm most likely heading towards a no (which is fine, at this point I just want to know with certainty and be able to say I at least gave it a shot, and hopefully it doesn't harm the friendship too much in the process).

Can you elaborate on the point about how you handle the rejection making miracles happen?

I seem to have a different perspective than a lot of the other replies. To me, the fact that she was honest and direct with you, and that she didn't want to date two guys at the same time, both seem like pretty good signs. It shows a level of maturity that I personally would respect and be attracted to. She was already seeing someone else so she cancelled and gave you an honest reason why, it ended up not working out with them, so now she's back in the game and able/willing to explore whatever c…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
