How is it doing neither? Are the two criteria mutually exclusive? Could a selective process be mostly meritocratic with restrictions to prevent an overwhelming majority demographic? Not arguing either side just trying to understand the discourse.

There is a difference between racial discrimination and crafting a racially diverse class. It’s not that affirmative action as a concept is bad, as long as there is a line between that and blatant discrimination.
