That's because women can now work and provide for themselves and their families without the help of a man. Historically before birth control women spent a lot of time pregnant during which they were in a weakened and vulnerable state they needed men for protection and to provide. Also child birth was dangerous a huge portion of women died in childbirth or were disabled or disfigured.

Debutante balls are nothing new I was a debutante and my parents certainly didn't spend 30k. It's a southern tradition where young women dress up and go to their first formal usually following completion of finishing school. 6 months of finishing school and the ball cost about $1200 and my grandparents paid for it because they wanted me to honor traditions.
