While I agree we must not get bogged down with trashing feminism (this is a big red herring), I think outright calling this just a distraction from "class" sounds like class reductionism, which I understand has its appeal, but to think that discrimination will end because feminism is going to end is not very defensible imo.

I agree that the political situation here in Mexico is pretty difficult in regards to gender politics, but one issue does not negate the other one. Preventing femicides is a good thing, and using this theory in this specific way is good policy. As for the homicide rate in Mexico, I would bet good amount of money that it is almost completely due to organized crime. Which hey, we can talk gender over here, it's not like people don't get pressured into it, but solving organized crime is a much more…

I largely agree with this, but you can only beat this rhetorical move by informing yourself and making a distinction between it, otherwise the bailey becomes too powerful. I would like to point out, however, than even in modern online spaces, there is also not a "president of feminism" or anything of the sort. It is a decentralized "movement", if we could even call it that; we should treat this issue as more of a cultural thing rather than as a coherent political ideology.

I think if we understand "patriarchy" or "systemic sexism" as broad tendencies that can be useful to have when applying policy to a broad population, it can be a very useful too to solve problem at a societal level. As soon as you get into specifics it starts breaking down very quickly, because it's not a tool that is good for specificity. So it's useful to say, "men have, broadly speaking, ways of inflicting harm on their spouses in specific ways that relate to gendered expectations and gender …

I think something that a lot of people miss is that actual academic feminism is not a monolith, they have traditionally fought with each other all the time. So when someone says "feminism stands for X", according to whom? Is there a president of feminism somewhere out there deciding what feminism "is"? And if "B" is false while "A" is true, then there's a wide gap between academic feminist theory and most feminists on this issue, This is completely true. I could not think of myself as a feminism…

For this, people would need to start thinking about motonormativity, and even in your most progressive circles this is very controversial. Hell, it is controversial in nonmono circles too!

Right, while I think there is something to be said about how much we value each person's life, I don't think it's a good moment to bring this up (outside of it being topical like in this subreddit). We just really need to get this motherfucker out of office.

You guys might think that this is hysterical, and idk about the specifics of the program but lots of people DO get brainbroken by porn. I'm not against it, but it has some risks if you start consuming regular hardcore porn in your teenage years without proper sex education.

The only risk I see with this rhetoric is thinking that men should fix male loneliness "by themselves", as if men and women can't be companions of each other.

Idk how one could possibly read bell hooks as anti men. She is one of the most based persons I have read about, legit great thinker with lots of interesting ideas who would probably hate the modern sidelining of men in feminist circles. The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead, patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. How could you possibly rea…

Recently I've taken a look at academic feminism, just a little bit, and I can say with relative confidence that most feminists would not like how they are being represented by activist spaces. You'd be surprised at the amount of plurality and inclusion that a lot of them breach; even co-opted theories such as intersectionalism were explicitly not about measuring who is more oppressed. I know that's not much of a relieve knowing that you will not engage with these activists in a discussion of ide…

No, but perhaps it could be more careful in romanticizing male sacrifice. It doesn't mean it can't portray it, but it can be more careful of how its framed.

I think pretending movies don't dabble in sexism just because they don't mention it specifically is a red herring. Sexism is about systems and trends, not necessarily about specific examples.

I'm not saying that the state should intervene and destroy gender, like it did with alcohol. I'm saying that "a lot of people enjoy it" is not a good defense for social criticism, or even social repression. Did we ever succeed in destroying systems that are liked by the majority of people? Depends on what you mean by "majority". Nationalism and full-blown racism are pretty much dead in 2025 if you compare it to pre-WW1 era, and I'd rather us not wage wars over social issues if we can solve them …

But I don't agree with that anymore since it turns out a lot of people actually like their gender identity. A lot of people derive great joy from expressing their gender identity and I think for a lot of people it is a core part of their identity. I think any kind of movement to abolish gender is bound to fail because there is very little support for it. A lot of people have derived great joy from other problematic elements in society, but that has never stopped us short of trying to deconstruct…

Hooks encouraged active oppression of men, and was a Bonified misandrist, When you read something like, The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If you think that de Boivoir or Bell Hooks are in the business of creating an institution that activele oppresses the male gender idk what even to tell you man. Now that is losing the plot. Academic circles often indulge in technical babble that can be potentially reinterpreted by mainstream audiences even if it directly contradicts the author's intent. We can see this in figures like Nietsche who was absorbed by Nazism despite explicitly condemning anti-semitism and cutting off one of his BFFs …

Well, it's because those feminists are bad-faith. But actual academic feminists are much more split on this. Mainstream feminists like to deflect criticism with "feminism is not a monolith", which IMO is a pretty bad faith way of dealing with criticism of activism, but the academic figures of feminism such as Simone de Bovair, Judith Butler or Bell Hooks are indeed not a monolith. Such a system cannot be called a, "patriarchy." I actually think there's a good-faith case to be made that "patriarc…

No, I definitely agree that men, when there are only men around, talk about "hot women" in a very rancid way. It's one thing to express attraction to someone and another one to express whatever the hell it is they are expressing.

You're conflating the effects with the causal mechanism. I'm not saying that the casual mechanism is necessarily "The Patriarchy". I'm saying that the same social class can cause you both pain and privilege, and just because "The Patriarchy" is an oversimplification of that system, it doesn't mean that it's a completely useless one. Suppose the competing hypothesis is just "life is complicated". Life is complicated, but that doesn't give us any useful point to tackle any issue. Understanding opp…

This is not unfalsifiable at all. Men can have the privilege of being the breadwinners and having economic control of the household, but that comes with the oppression of how a lot of companies treat their employers. Women can have the privilege of being allowed to express a wife array of emotions, but they also have people take thir ideas less seriously. You can't map oppression and social classes into a neat slider. Society is not simple in that way, and what gives you power in some ways can m…

The thing that I hate the most about this is that it clearly exposes that monogamy can be toxic, but people only point out when polyamory or alternate lifestyles don't work (like they normally would, since not all relationships work, and most don't last forever), but when it comes to this, it's perfectly justifiable behavior. I agree with this, with a small asterisk. Feminist theory can give us good insights; the mistake is not using this hammer, but thinking everything is a nail. We should see feminism as one tool, not the tool.

I feel this way even when talking with ostensibly pro-male issues advocates. A lot of the time they simply wanna shit on feminism, and if you talk to an allegedly "pro-male feminist" or smt, they always say "yeah guess you should join feminism huh?" So yeah I do feel that way. Ironically, the way men's issues are handled right now just reinforces the fact that men should live for women, or that men's lives are unimportant.

Perhaps a pragmatic argument could be made for quotas, but just that - a pragmatic one, i.e., we get X amount of women in a job so that they are given a chance in the first place if they fit certain requirements (since workspace bias can be a real thing), and then see after the quota is lifted if there is any change. This is the only situation where I could see a quota as a viable plan.

I feel as if marriage and monogamy has been somewhat corrupted by a push towards sexual openness to the point that I think it is damaging. Well, if you are only trying to have sex with lots of people out of being contrarian or contemporary, then sure, you're probably corrupting yourself. But there is no "corruption" of an essential characteristic of sex because sex doesn't have any meaning to it. I don’t think such an emphasis on sex is a good thing. That depends on the context. I think it's good for you if you find a way to express such values with someone. That one relationship is probably pretty good. However... monogamy is one of those things that, the more I think about it, the less sense it makes, and the more toxic it appears to me.

Women who left the workforce for a year earned, during their years on the job, an average of 39 percent less than men, the study found. To be fair 39% of income reduction across a career over a one-year maternity leave is still extremely harsh.

Who gives a shit? She raped a disabled boy and doesn't regret it. She is also a person, even if she did a terrible thing. More importantly, she can still be of use to us. Also important we could at least have her self-sustain instead of using tax dollars to maintain her without negative secondary effects. But you're certainly falling over yourself to defend her. I am not defending her actions. She did a very terrible thing and consequences are sure to follow that. Little evidence after she was t…

Murder is okay so long as it's state-mandated, huh?

It's not only the sentence. She should stay there her whole life if the risk of repeat offences is high. The thing is that we're sentencing someone a useless life instead of doing something productive with the situation.

She raped a disabled child, should she really be released into society? She should be released if we be reasonably sure that she won't do it again and that she will be a productive member of society.

It takes a very evil kind of person to pull that shit. You don't know that. She did a terrible thing, but you don't know her as a person. I am not saying "she probably has positive qualities!" or something. I am saying that you're making a very strong assumption here with little evidence. Those kinds of people deserve no redemption in my eyes. There's that word again, "deserve".

Do you guys really think that a life sentence is a good solution to a sexual assault? EDIT: I didn't say punishment, I said solution. I do not say this because she is a woman. I legitimately think that we treat criminals harshly for no reason other than revenge, and that's terrible for them and the victims, since no constructive solution is made. I am not justifying this terrible act nor making a judgement on whether she "deserved it" or not.

"There should be more women in STEM fields!" -Women in social sciences. Also, I agree with another poster: we are better than these dumb memes.

Well, to be fair, rape is sex, just unconsented one. Sure, this headline may indicate that women that do sex crimes are portrayed less harshly, but it's technically not a wrong headline.

"Typically" is the wrong word here, dictionaries usually say "especially" when a word refers to various things, but usually to one situation.

It must be pretty hard. The damage done by rape is pretty high, but I can't see how to prove rape happened. I can only see how they can prove that sex happened.

Being hard to prove is not the same as the allegation being false, though.

Well, even if it were true (I both hope that it is and hope that it isn't), it would only be on Germany.

At least give her the benefit of the doubt. A lot can happen in four years. If she hasn't changed, so be it, but give her that much.

You don't get to change. Yes, you do, you can always change. I am sick and fucking tired of you piece of shit liberals I am not a liberal. When a conservative gets attacked, no defense ever matter to you scumbags. What the hell are you talking about? Go take a break, dude. No one is defending anyone and no one is attacking no one (except for you).

This was 4 years ago. Maybe she has changed? EDIT: Hilarious that you complain about feminism being an echo chamber, but when someone suggests or hopes that someone has changed in four fucking years, you downvote the hell out of it. You want a discussion or you want to complain?

No, dude. Stop victimizing men. It needs votes because that's how governments work; you can't just say "it will help people!" and put it everywhere.

Because men are not affected much by HPV, it's mostly women. Men tend to be carriers, though, so it's better for everyone if we're vaccinated.

Exactly. Sex is not bad. Not everything that results in an uncomfortable situation is reportable.

I'd say it depends on several other factors. I friend I was courting with eventually decided to stop. I keeped it going, unadvertedly thinking that it was her usual "what are we doing" stuff. Eventually we just stopped talking when I was left frustrated and she was flustered with so much contact. We are making reparations now (we were pretty close) but I think it's safe to say that no psychological damage was done to her.
