All good! I was just confused. And yeah, maybe! Just hasn't happened to me I suppose.

I'm not sure what you're referring to or if you meant to reply to my comment. But to clarify, what I think is hard to imagine is going from never being attracted to thinking a girl is totally hot based on how they were like in conversation as a straight guy.

I sort of feel like this is actually how the majority of women go about life insofar as assessing men's attraction goes. Unless someone is quite close to their type or strikingly unattractive they take little notice and do not have aversion nor interest until a conversation is struck. Would you say this is an accurate take based on the women you know? Because I think many men are subconsciously or consciously gauging how attractive women around them are all the time.

Not to invalidate what you said at all but it is so hard for me to imagine the latter case happening as a guy hahahaha, I've just never experienced that towards a girl

What do you not tolerate that you think other guys have to? Just curious :0

I think you're missing the argument because not only are you losing leverage over HV men (which as you state were not within range), you are also losing leverage over average men that are within range because they have preferences for, and access to younger women (or so the argument goes). So even if it were true that women have disproportionate leverage in the dating market or at least the online one, there is still an appreciable within-person/intraindividual loss of leverage over time that me…

Haha, I think I mostly agree? A few thoughts... 1. What is borderline incel to you? I just think thats super funny. I think you have a stricter definition of hoeflation than me maybe. I agree that its not actually that much of a thing b/c most people are sane, and more-or-less realistic about their prospects. But for whatever amount of "hoeflation" that does occur, they don't need to actually get what they want in a sustainable way to distort the dating pool so to speak. They just need to convin…

I actually largely agree. Not really a caveat but I guess I will add that I do think the "first cause" so to speak is the distorting effect of dating apps on womens' self perception of their mate value (if we must use this language), and the cultural consequences of that. However, the things you mention perpetuate and exacerbate hoeflation.

Doubling down on this, where are the sources? I am also mindblown
/r/PurplePillDebate14/05/26 08:25 PM

I mean this sort of is the lack of charity OP is referring to. "If you're saying "choose me" under the guise of "choose better" then the advice, or critique, isn't genuine. it's self serving." Yeah, if that was the case (which it is often, admittedly), then it is disingenuous and self-serving. But what if it isn't? What if it is just sort of annoying to here someone launch into full on misandry because they failed to differentiate an obviously shitty guy from a not shitty one, and then completel…

Sorry I got super busy! Personality refers to an individual's system of characteristic adaptations in domains of thinking, feeling, and behaviour. The measurement of personality has been operationalized into the Big 5 trait structure. These traits are gender non-specific in the sense that everyone has them to varying degrees, and the previous study I linked shows that members of either gender are typically more alike than different. However, how these traits manifest, and levels of traits are co…

I was just adding to the convo, I don't actually disagree with you per se. Research supports the notion that both genders actually prefer to have agreeable partners--its a consensual preference. I just don't like how it seems like you conflate connotations of disagreeableness with the trait itself, and what the implications of that trait is. Its also important to factor in how people work around their traits so to speak, how high those traits are, etc. I also just think (purely anecdotally) that…

Important to note that what is adaptive is context dependent, and all levels of traits carry benefits and tradeoffs. Here is a blog post/podcast episode from a psychiatrist discussing the pros/cons of trait agreeableness at length. I'm just curious, did you find this study from my one post about gendered expectations in dating? Because I cited it lmao
/r/PurplePillDebate10/05/26 03:57 AM

Well I mean, I'd love to be proven wrong because that sounds super cool. Can you DM or link some stuff below for me to check out? Especially the following claims (if possible). The (Enneagram) system is not ineffective, its people taking the test. The Dr. Phil thing. The model(s) you developed. TBH I know there are tailor-purpose personality assessments for different occupations, but large organizations don't exactly always use the best measures regardless. I'm also not against a typology (even …
/r/PurplePillDebate05/05/26 04:33 AM

It might not help because enneagrams are made up, and lack the scientific rigour (e.g., reliability, cruss-cultural validity, incremental validity, predictive validity) of empirically supported models of personality like the Big 5. Thoughtfully interpreting your big 5 scores (including facet scores) probably would give you way more reliable insight than a typology that isn't on firm scientific ground

Yeah, these traits are generically considered feminine/masculine by broader society whether you and I believe it to be the case personally, I sent you evidence that there are gendered differences, and ultimately I'm just speaking with that language by convention. Answering you based on your post's paragraph number. Descriptions like "agreeableness," "compliance," "cooperation," have operationalized definitions in personality literature that are gender non-specific, lmao. I don't like any men in …

This post is remarkable because you happened to unify all genders and all pills against you HAHAHA. Perhaps the true gender equality was the friends we made along the way...
/r/PurplePillDebate04/05/26 08:15 PM

Hmm, well again, thank you for your engagement. I think a lot of how you're reacting does make sense in that context, and I think its hard not to perceive me as similar to those men you described. The biggest thing is that I think my expectations are more gendered-by-coincidence than gendered due to gender-essentialist beliefs per se**.** I think that in every relationship, there is a partner that wears the pants more than the other (you being a prime example, lmao). People can say whatever they…
/r/PurplePillDebate04/05/26 07:29 PM

That makes sense!! You sound like a wonderful partner. How you deal with really mismatched libido? Like his is significantly higher than yours. Yeah, I never got the "girls need to be dumb" thing at all. What's your general age and cultural background, though? I just feel like this is maybe more of a thing elsewhere. I'm North America based and in my late 20's. That expectation in specific was always bizarre and just not true to life in my experience (though I dislike arrogance in anyone)
/r/PurplePillDebate04/05/26 03:28 AM

I'm going to ignore your constant over-inferred misrepresentations of my actual views, and instead thank you for typing what is a pretty long response. Also, I agree with your last paragraph. I'm kinda curious, what's your general age range, and cultural milieu? I ask because frankly alot of what you mention sounds super archaic to me. I'm late gen Z in North America.
/r/PurplePillDebate04/05/26 03:20 AM

Haha, well it sounds like you've done well for yourself, and by your daughter! Congrats :)
/r/PurplePillDebate04/05/26 03:13 AM

This was pretty much the exact answer I was looking for, and I think the mindset that I imagine should be pushed. I'm curious if you're willing to elaborate on: 1.The sex part. Mostly because that's so vague. Like, the expectation in pretty much any relationship is to have it obviously lmao, but I imagine you're speaking to more than that it just happens sometimes. What are examples of some behaviours you felt pressure to conform to, but reject?

No, it doesn't matter for me in the context of this conversation because I'm ONLY asking you to address "c," as specified earlier. Please do that. Not that it doesn't matter in the broader society. I'm here to dig for specific information, not to debate--hence the post flair. Just address "c" in detail, please. As for double standards, I'm talking about the relative forgiveness granted. I thought it was pretty gross, and I think I'd be rolled if I had a separate account reviewing all the various…

I think your confusion makes sense, what I'm trying to confirm is whether what I think those gendered expectations are match what women think the expectations placed on them are. There are likely differences between a) my expectations b) what I think gendered expectations of women are, which dont fully overlap with a) c) what women actually think/feel is imposed on them, which may not be entirely a or b So my direct request to you is to just elaborate on C. So I'm hoping you do (please!), but to…

I have a feeling you've done far more good than harm! That makes total sense to me. People love to criticize patriarchy (as they should), and the men that uphold it, but the extent that women reinforce it is dramatically underemphasized, and with hardly any of the vitriol. I think the blade ought to cut both ways. I believe you have personally! I am talking about the broader phenomenon. I just feel like society promotes gender non-nom-conformity in women, and pushes men to accept women who aren'…

I would extend greater benefit of the doubt,, but I sympathize with your position to a degree. I feel like I'm stuck between doomers that see no nuance or variation that you can just go out and observe in the natural world, but on the flip side "normies" completely deny these broad trends that are established in empirical literature and observable if you just like, walk around a mall lmao.

Ohhh, interesting! How is that going for them and whats their general age if you dont mind me asking (you don't have to be exact, but like idk mid-genZ, alpha, etc). I do think gender roles tend to obscure true compatibility to people across genders. I think I'm fortunate that I mostly align with the male side of things, but its rough if you don't. I think my maybe hot take is that I really do feel that (if I had to), I'd point my finger at women more than man in the modern day with this issue i…

Ahhh tyty. I especially appreciate the expectations about behaviour (aside from looking good) that you mentioned--its helping me fill the gap a bit. Where the gap comes from for me is that I think women will deride (and very old school guys will demand) these really traditional things like cooking or cleaning but I think most people across genders don't (at least consciously) ascribe to those beliefs anymore. But I imagine there still are other gendered behaviours women feel they are told to be …

If what you're saying is genuine then it sounds fair! I don't think anyone should compromise who they are in their essence. The root of the question is to better understand what women actually think that they "ought" to do in dating and relationships according to society--whether they agree w/ it or not. So please talk to that point (what you felt you were told to/pressured to do).

Sounds like it all worked out for the best :) Yeah, I'm glad I was able to dodge the hyper-religious/ultra-traditionalist stuff too. I think I didn't fully catch onto the full scope of gendered expectations on me as a guy, but frankly on everyone until like the tail end of adolescence if not later lmao.
/r/PurplePillDebate03/05/26 03:53 AM
3

Yeah, I think everything you said is fair! As for the last sentence--I don't actually mind the standards, my felt sense is just that there is an asymmetry in gendered expectations for men vs women in the modern dating context. Like its still totally normal to ask men for all the above, but I feel like I'd be hung on the street as a guy for explicitly saying that I expect women to perform their gender role in return. BUT, then I realized that I don't have the best grasp on what women feel like th…

I'm curious how you'd receive the soft version of this position: Since women are far more selective across a really wide variety of traits that they expect men to meet (e.g., be confident, be taller, make more money, be more assertive), and typically a variety of demands that women don't have reciprocally imposed on them (e.g., I've never expected a woman to physically defend me, ask me out, pay for all our dates, be my emotional rock, be especially funny/witty, be braver than me, be emotionally…

/r/PurplePillDebate16/04/26 08:32 AM

I think you're wrong because the peak people are talking about is in reference to how the different (heterosexual) genders assign mate value. While recent research suggests that women underreport how much physical appearance matters to them and men underreport how much wealth matters to them, it is still the case that men place a significantly greater priority on physical appearance than other aspects. The argument then goes that since much of a woman's mate value is predicated on their appearan…

I'll be unabashedly honest here, and say that with me in particular I won't respect a woman less (or at least not enough to end things if compatibility is present) for sleeping with ME, but not others. Why? Because I know that I am trustworthy, well adjusted, and legitimately interested in them as a person. But if it is their habit of sleeping with other men whom I have no grounds to believe have these qualities, then I do lose respect, and they are also less attractive to me by default. What I'…

Am OP, finally found time to reply. Thank you for turning this into an actually debatable post! I'll address your first post and then your numbered points in turn--hoping and expecting you'll reply: 0 (the original post): Honestly neither the presented narrative nor what you mentioned is underneath that matches my views, but that (and frankly this whole post) is anecdotal. I don't even inherently disagree with what I take to be some BP claims, but regularly across the aisle people clearly have no idea what premises, conclusions, logical validity, or truth (as it pertains to informal logic) are. They just say whatever with no structure whatsoever and call it a day. Its a pain to read.

I just wonder if you, OP, will let the sword cut both ways when women complain about having to be hot, having to dress better, always having to "perform femininity," and being considered essentially invisible if they're fat, ugly-compared-to-their-peers, too loud, too assertive, etc. Its just not what most men like, and that's that.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt because your original post said "I'm not sure what you're all thinking that would accomplish," but it might be looking like you miscomprehended not once, but twice. You're right--people can address it as much as they want, that's the whole point. Replying to me and phrasing the replies as if I'm the one endorsing these views is dense and will be called as such. Are you dense? What part of "I'd infer the topic of the debate is X" equates to "I agree with X?" It…

I'd infer the topic of the debate is: If it is true that: this woman is making poor choices on behalf of her and her children, & These behaviours are the result of hypergamous tendencies in women, & Because most women are hypergamous, many women will make similarly poor choices, Then: Should society actively push against hypergamous behaviour in women--why or why not? I'm sorry but I'm not sure I follow. When you say that's exactly the kind of experience women also have, what experience are you referring to? All I've been saying is that it sounds like the women he's meeting are pretty broken up over their current+former relationship history, he is less so, and he doesn't exactly want to be in a position to deal with it long term. That doesn't sound "equally damaged" as people are claiming here. One party sounds significantly less damaged than the other. Peopl…

Eh, I guess. I just don't like jumping to that. I see what you're saying fundamentally, and iIt's poor phrasing for sure, but "emotional responsibility" can mean a whole lot of things. I bristle at the wording too but that's assuming an uncharitable interpretation when, if anything, guy seems to feel some empathy to people he really doesn't owe anything to yet. If there's a smoking gun its not found in the post, all we have are OP's words
/r/PurplePillDebate03/03/26 02:49 AM

I mean, I guess call me and a ton of other people peak damaged, but I sort of feel like I do need to deal with someone's emotions if they start crying over their relationship in the middle of a date. or are otherwise just acting emotionally eviscerated. I feel like its really natural to feel the impulse to respond to that, but also to worry that it might colour a lot of your future relationships down the road if its a consistent thing? Idk, I guess I just don't see how "distraught with grief," which sounds pretty intense, and avoiding having to deal with said grief but (I'd assume) not experiencing it themselves is equivalent. I wouldn't really just infer the grief is somewhere there or that they're unavailable just off what was written? Kinda sounds like he's not the same thing to me.
/r/PurplePillDebate03/03/26 02:30 AM

I mean, taking his words for granted I don't really see what's so damaged about him. I think there's plenty of women who have said something equivalent (don't want to date someone emotionally immature, don't want to do emotional labour and be anyone else's emotional support). Buddy expresses empathy and seems to try to be there for someone he's not committed to despite feeling reluctant to do so. What gives?

I'll forgive the frustration because I also get exasperated by people on the internet and I was being imprecise. As per the quote--yeah, my bad! What I mean is that a lot of appearance enhancement women do, which they likely perceive to exponentially enhance their desirability to men, is actually intrasexual competition+ misperception of what men want. I hope you're right! Just don't have the privilege of bringing it up too much irl. I like your geographical emphasis here. This irks me b/c I'm Asian dude LOL, and my preferences align to what we consider slim. So not only do even less people fit the bill, but w/ me sitting at 14ish% bodyfat, and our general cultural standards, I'm not even all that impressed. I do think you're more or less right on this point though.
/r/PurplePillDebate18/02/26 06:29 AM

Sure, but I think. How these factors and their interactions can be quantified/mapped in multiple cultural contexts, and then bear out in anecdotal accounts is neat. I also think that you overestimate (or maybe I underestimate) people's willingness to speak beyond the typical niceties when it comes to mate selection. My bigger, arguably indirect question was: What do you think you can get out of the "mating market" by being a slimmer, smaller girl? It wasn't just "what are people attracted to." I…

Lol, care to clarify what constraints you're so averse to? A read of the thread would suggest that near everyone else got the cue, and found a way to provide a meaningful response. I'm trying to give explicit permission for people to drop their typical niceties and state what they think they feel they can reasonably seek while emphasizing that this isn't the thread for an ethical debate over what "should" be the case. A discussion worth having, just not the focus of this particular thread.

You sound like such a catch--happy for you two. If you're willing to level w/ me (please!!!) as I think we are more-or-less politically aligned on the left, my big peeve is one-sided gendered expectations. My political evolution insofar as dating goes was that while I thought we as a collective were trying to dissolve all gender roles. I'm ngl this was so funny but I mean that with complete respect hahaha. That really is quite specific. I guess you just need to get in with the local metal crowd, and keep rolling the dice....Also O.L.D. might really be the move. Good luck to you truly!!

This was such an unexpected and wholesome comment haha, thank you so much! I do appreciate it. I try to be authentic and clear, even on the internet :') I bet we'd get along.

I think internet anonymity and the fact that I'm more interested in perception (which can modulate behaviour) rather than the actual thing. To give a problematic example that I think might be to taste--a girl who really puts a ton of effort into her makeup may think that this effort justifies a really attractive partner. Now, most men for better or worse don't really care, but her perception of this likely adjusts her selective behaviour. I guess they could still lie and sugar coat it, but idk, …

Totally man! That's why I just wanna see the variation. It is a mildly helpful and v entertaining thing, that's all haha

If you don't mind diving a bit deeper, what traits were attractive to you?

I guess two things: My question is a bit more precise. Not so much "what do these girls find attractive?" More "what do these girls think they can get in the 'dating market'?" Idk if its a problem! I just wanna hear opinions, and I'm casting a wide net. The trends will emerge. At the end of the day we all will go for what we go for, but these responses will ideally yield trends that give me a bit of a temperature check.

Surely! Sadly I don't think the majority of people act on the true autonomy they have on what that they're attracted to, to the detriment of everyone. Your first line is what I'm interested in. Research suggests that girls overestimate how desirable slimness is to men, put far greater weight on height, and select for a wider range of attributes. So, all this being the case, I wonder what women who are slim and small (and other people who imagine themselves in those shoes) think their "buying pow…

Both! Shallow and "deeper" traits are all welcomed

I support what I take to be the spirit of your answer (wide variations in attraction) but I think you're really not looking close enough to say you've "never seen physical traits predict what someone is attracted to for either men or women." I'd say more but its too early to give my take when I'm fielding opinions.

I'm of the same mind, not sure what they're getting at.

Idk man, I think the ladies are free to say whatever and I'm encouraging the ugly truth here. What circle jerk do you worry about?

Haha close but not quite (replied above), but what's funny is that as a v young (like 8) y/o boy being told to respect all genders equally, my child notion of this was that everyone should pair up by matching height and income hahaha.

I don't actually get the privilege to have these convos in irl too much so let's engage! I appreciate your response and I hope you'll reply to this one. Either way, these points are on the proverbial public record. I'm actually 5'7 haha, 5'5 to me is just entry-level average-to-small/stereotypically desirable height for a girl so I went for that. Like I said, more interested in what "buying power" girls think they get for possessing these traits rather than my own preferences per se. On a person…

Replying to you first to say I lol'd at your flair hahahahah--ty for the response :') Sounds pretty doable

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
