If that’s the scale, then I do not have any close friendships with men or women.

I would make your definition clearer, maybe separate it out and put it in the intro. That didn’t really stand out to me the first time I read it. I know what’s going on in my male friends’ lives and we often have inside jokes (lots of memes and bitmojis), but it’s not clear to me what you mean by non-sexual intimacy. Maybe I just don’t have friendships with men (or women for that matter) that meet your definitio , which is why I haven’t seen this play out in my life.

I think you need to include your definition of “close friend.” I define close friend as someone I could call upon for a favor or help when I need it, and I know they’d be there for me. I have several close friends who are male, but our relationships have never looked like this. They are all friends with my husband as well. Some were his friends first and some were mine, but it’s very clear that they all respect my husband and our relationship.

That’s why I said $$ impacts SMV, not adds to it.

This is a prime example of the subjective nature of SMV. Sure there are some things that are generally universally attractive in women, but preferences differ. My husband says all the time that there’s nothing sexier than when I go down on him in nothing but Louboutins (and maybe some Agent Provocateur), and he can watch my cherry red nails wrapped around him. He also loves the way my wedding ring looks when my nails are painted that color. To you, that probably seems high maintenance or gaudy, …

I think high paying jobs (and therefore to some extent education) do have an effect SMV, but maybe not in the way you're approaching it. There's a well known saying, "There no such thing as an ugly woman, just a poor one." My husband had no idea how much $$$ it took to keep up my looks until we combined finances. It certainly is not cheap! Honestly, I think I look better at 25 than I did at 20 in large part because I spend more on my appearance. Preventative Botox, skin care products, facials, c…

I guarantee your BF is aware his eating habits bother you. Also, remember, watch his ACTIONS and see if they support or negate his words.

Sometimes the truth stings. Spend a little more time around this forum and you’ll come to learn my “claims” aren’t so absurd.

First, you need to watch what your BF does, and not what he is saying. It is apparent that his picky eating bothers you much more than are willing to admit in your post, which probably means that you comment on his eating habits or tease him (aka nag him) more than you are willing to admit to yourself. Although your BF has repeatedly stated that he is interested in expanding his palette, his actions do not back up his words. If your BF truly wanted to expand his palette then his actions would re…

The only way you can expand his palette is by preparing foods you like and giving him the opportunity to try them. If you make a beautiful dinner of lemon pepper chicken thighs and mushroom risotto and your BF still wants kraft macaroni with cut up hotdogs, then you need to STFU and move on. Only your BF gets to decide what he eats, and if he wants to eat like a fussy toddler that’s on him. Only he can decide to expand his palette, so any tricks are your part really are just nagging and motherin…

My husband is extremely particular about his laundry. He uses a specific, hard to find brand and scent of detergent, he will only put certain fabrics and colors into one load, he has custom settings he uses on the washer and dryer and needs his clothes to be folded/hung/put away in a very particular and exact manner. When we first started living together, he was appalled at how I did my laundry. I just do darks, lights and towels/sheets. I’ll use any detergent and sometimes I let my clothes sit …

For me, being a picky eater is a deal breaker. My love of cooking is so central to who I am, that I could never be with someone long term who is a picky eater. Some posters may not agree with this stance, but I think it is a huge red flag if a man is a picky eater. It can have a huge impact on your relationship, and I can only imagine that it makes feeding children incredibly difficult if Dad only eats certain foods but the child is expected to try and eat whatever is served to them. Personally,…

My husband and I are in a unique situation where we work in different areas within the same field. Objectively, I am much more successful than he is. I make considerably more, I have a more prestigious title, my job has more autonomy and influence, and I am more involved in organizations and publications. And, to add more more salt to the wound, even though we have been working for about the same amount of time, I am quite a bit younger than he is. When the reality of the situation first started…

I am one lucky lady in that my passion is my career. I work in a really specialized field in public service, and in my free time I like to do historical research and am always coming up with new ideas for academic publications. I am one of those people that never stops working, because there's always something new and interesting to learn. I do quite a bit of hobby reading as well. Biographies, social science books, philosophy texts, and scientific research publications. I really truly just have…

I do not engage in sexual activities without monogamy. This includes any activity that goes beyond hand holding, hugging, and kissing. I made that clear to my husband on our second date, when it became clear he was interested in pursuing additional activities. I believe I literally said, “I don’t engage in sexual activities without monogamy. For me that includes anything beyond hand holding, hugging and kissing. To me monogamy means that you are not seeing, talking to or pursuing other women in …

First, I would like to share my own childhood experience. Both of my parents worked. They both have successful careers. Until I started school, I spent the majority of my time with my nanny and my maternal grandmother. I personally see no downside to this. I had two excellent, traditional, and feminine role models in addition to my mother. They taught me how to cook, clean, sew, garden and took me to lots of fun activities at the park, library and church. The relationships I formed with my grand…

I would look into cohabitation agreements. In a cohabitation agreement, you basically set up rules for cohabitation. You could include things like : *The cats are your personal property, regardless of contribution of care or money on the part of BF, they remain your personal property *You will not be placed on the lease, instead you will be your BF's tenant and have the rights of a tenant. This means your BF would have to give you sufficient notice to vacate the apartment and you are not on the …

When my husband and I met, we were both doctoral students. I also worked in my field part-time during grad school as well. Our field of study is notorious for being extremely demanding, and our program was no different. I think the the real issue here is that you've only been in the program for a week. You haven't even given the schedule a chance at this point, and I think it is understandable that there will be an adjustment phase. I think your fiancé recognizes that the short term struggles ar…

I believe that abortion should be a choice, but that men should have input. My Husband also believes abortion should be a choice, but does not believe he would be able to make the decision to terminate a healthy fetus. I am not sure if I would be able to make the decision to terminate, especially if my Husband was against it. I have thought about potentially putting the creature up for adoption if I don't feel attached to it after birth. I could simply tell people I was acting as a surrogate for…

My husband and I are "permanent" DINKs. I put permanent in quotes, because we have decided that if we were to experience an unexpected, but otherwise healthy, pregnancy that we would not terminate. My husband does not wish to get "the snip," so that will remain a teeny tiny possibility. Personally, we decided to go the no kids route, because we don't want to change our lifestyle. I am very committed to my career and possess no maternal instinct. My husband fiercely guards his free time, and didn…

You’re very lucky that you have such a self aware husband. I sympathize with his struggle for self control. When I left the house yesterday, I asked my husband to make sure it was clear of Halloween candy by the time I got home. I cannot have that stuff in the house! I don’t know what he did with it, but I was happy to come back to a candy free home :)

Oh the joys of expensive skin care! I am not embarrassed to admit that I've made several skin care purchases that exceeded our $250 limit. When we merged our finances originally, we gave a presentation to the other person about our spending habits and showed them the last three months of our budget. My Husband was shocked at how much I spent on self care. He had no idea it took so much time or money to keep up these good looks ;) Since we've been married, my husband has expressed his preference …

When we originally developed our system, we called this the "veto power" and set the limit at $250. We set that limit because we are both very frugal, and consider anything over that amount a "big purchase." Even though we envisioned that it would truly be a "veto power" it has really turned out to be more of an "FYI." Example from a conversation we actually had this week: Husband - "Hey babe, I've decided I am going to pull the trigger on those golf clubs. It is the end of the season and I thin…

Chapter 6 was the only chapter I continued to struggle with after reading the book. The author makes it seem like relenquishing the finances is the foundation of surrendering to your husband, and that any involvement or knowledge of the finances undermines your husband’s leadership. In our case, relinquishing total control and knowledge of the finances seems silly. I trust that my husband could do them on his own, but why would I lie and tell him I “cannot” when our current system works so well?…

Yes! We both work outside of the home and are members of the same profession. Our earning power and potential are equal, but I currently make slightly less. I was offered a fellowship after completing my graduate studies, and while very prestigious, it is not particularly lucrative. Thankfully when it wraps up, I will be earning within the same range as my Husband.

We do have a rule where we need to let the other person know before spending $250 or more on a single purchase. So, I guess technically we both have to ask for money. Is that rule emasculating? I've never used my veto power.
