I recently read a really article about research on just this topic. They've apperantly found that relationships between men are a lot closer and more intimate in cultures were homophobia is rampant. In the middle-east it's not uncommon for men to hold hands, and just a few generations ago in western cultures it would be normal for men to write letters of how much they miss each other, as revealed by historic documuents.
