Okay, let's say you're common-law, and then you decide to end it and separate. What if the other party isn't happy with the arrangement? Let's say they take it to court. How does the court view it? My bet is they consider it as if you were married.

I suppose it's to protect and both parties from each other. In theory anyway. This stuff doesn't necessarily bother me because my philosophy with getting married is that you should only do it if you're prepared to lose it all to that person. Same logic applies to lending money to friends.
