Perhaps it was a matter of where slave virtues were directed at? Christianity is much weaker now, but before it's decline, perhaps these virtues were directed at the Church rather than proping up hamsters and feminists.

Look at feminism's "academic" root, postmodernism and there you find your answer. It is psuedointellectualism targeted at genuine intellectualism, a horrendously complex and flawed philosophy that cuts at the core of Western society, rationalism. Postmodernism has been used to defend anything from feminism to mainstream media. It looks like liberal arts majors really have changed the world. Just in a bad way.
