It seems that his parents are very determined to fight for his attention and need him (maybe as a distraction from their own lukewarm marriage/boring life; a lot of moms kind get fixated on their son and get really controlling because they can't stand him growing up into an independent man as they feel lonely and lost when they can't be a mother) I've often wondered about that too, if their marriage isn't happy (I would imagine if their bedroom door is always open that not much intimacy happens …

Thank you for your input. This is something that has worried me slightly...is "surrendering" appropriate if he's still at home? He does say that he is staying there to save money, and he certainly doesn't go on big fancy trips or spends big for fun. I just have a hard time understanding the choice to stay with controlling parents when the option to leave is very accessible. His parents are not paying for his tuition, and he had to take out loans to pay for his schooling. But they do pay for anything else--toiletries, food, bills, etc. His income goes towards savings and paying off his loans. He has been working for about 6 months now, at the place he will be offered a permanent position when he graduates.
