I do the exact same thing every single first date. Same bar, same table, no food just drinks. I buy a bottle of wine o we split it over conversation. 4 out of 5 times she buys a round or two after. I do this because I'm comfortable in my favorite bar, I'm a good conversationalist, and I want to get to know her a little bit and make sure I like her before I make any investment such hiking dates. I go on a lot of fucking dates and anything more than this would be too much.

Male here, I get hit on a lot by girls, and some clearly come off as more desperate than others. Being on the receiving end of that has taught me a lot and helped me realize what's attractive and what's not. I echo a lot of what you say. There are a lot of women out there who I initially would not go out of my way to talk to/not find attractive but could fuck me that night if they showed up with some confidence and quality game.
