I have studied biology, and... not really. Ignoring the fact that r/K theory really belongs back in the 70s where it came from and has outlived its usefulness, it's focused on the life history of a species, not specifically the number of offspring that species has. The number of offspring is only part of the determinant. An r leaning species has a faster growth rate to allow the population to grow fast to exploit an ecological niche (note: a shit nightclub is not an ecological niche). So a bacte…

Actually, it used to be normal for women to have their teeth pulled out before marriage. A decent set of falsies was incredibly attractive to a man - it showed she looked after herself by pre-empting any dental issues. So a set of real teeth was seen as trouble waiting to happen, and unattractive.

Basically kids are fucking expensive and the idea of having them without sacrifice is laughable.

44% of US children live in low income families: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/nccp-finds-44-percent-u-s-children-live-low-income-families/

There are plenty of instances where the cost of childcare is more expensive than the post-tax income of the lower earning parent... Especially pre-school. http://www.scarymommy.com/childcare-is-more-expensive-than-college/ http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/article-1633411/Calculator-Do-childcare-costs-make-working-worthwhile.html https://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/feb/19/cost-childcare-high-uk-families-work-family-childcare-trust-nursery https://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/oct/05/childca…

Well, I'm assuming that you can't find a flaw in what I say, or you'd be disputing it. But. You're forgetting that most people make decisions like they're not going to divorce. Therefore, her staying at home benefits their children. It also, in a lot of cases, is more financially feasible than both parents working, because childcare costs. Especially pre-school. The poll in question - that says that 56% (about half) of women would prefer to stay at home if they could doesn't differentiate, I bel…

Average girls don't get messaged by hot guys, (especially not hot guys whose pics are pro shoots) except in two situations. One. It's a catfish, or a scam, and you'll leave either without your stuff or your vital organs. Or two, on a dating site, they're pretending to be after a relationship but are going to try and go for the ONS then disappear. Obviously given it's Tinder and nearly everyone is there for hook ups I'd be more worried about my kidneys than being ghosted. The only two ways to res…

Not really interested in men in their mid-50s, closer to my parents age than mine. My mom would probably think they were hot though, except that the aging-surfer-haircut on the second guy would not be her thing.

Her benefit, without alimony, is limited to the time they're in a relationship. After that she's at a disadvantage, because she can only take a job around school hours, is seen as an undedicated worker because she has to leave when kids are sick, and may have to refuse promotions to stay the primary caregiver. All of which affect her earning potential long after the kids are grown, because careers, like pensions, work on compound interest. His benefit - the extra hours he could put in at the sta…

I think "fit" is the uncontested part. As in, healthy is attractive. You're not an attractive long term prospect if you don't look like you've got a long term! Whether there is one specific endgoal that you ought to look like or whether a range is acceptable or whether you just want to target one body type for one specific type of girl is debatable. From what RP guys say it seems like they only think this is ideal and this is what a normal person can aim for. Whereas this person would be told to…

It's not necessarily the most politic thing to have your no-higher-qualifications, left-Yugoslavia-just-before-a-civil-war, immigrant, wife on your arm as you try and enact policies to stop immigrants and people trying to get away from wars. Much better to have your all-American daughter.

Given the discussion about Donald Trump downthread, it's worth pointing out that in 2008 Ivana Trump (the first wife) married a 36 year old man at the age of 59.

Being fit isn't necessarily about being muscular... a marathon runner is fit, but they're not bodybuilding competition or gay magazine centrefold ripped, which seems to be what most RP guys hold up as the perfect ideal. And where in the 'fit' range of marathon runner to triathlete to 100m runner to bodybuilder a woman prefers is entirely preference.

I don't understand why you think the children aren't the financial responsibility of both parents. Or that their upbringing is the responsibility of both parents. It seems perfectly reasonable - for the sake of the kids - to keep the kids in the family home then reassess once they're gone. Unless, of course, he cares more about himself than his children. Which unfortunately seems to be the case more and more. Women who can't take care of themselves financially as a responsible adult have no busi…

But if the custodial parent bears "the burden of divorce" the children suffer. I'm interested to see how you think the children can stay in the family home while the custodial parent doesn't. If a non-custodial parent "punishes" their ex- by withholding financial support for the family home, I don't see how the children don't get kicked out along with the custodial parent. The simple fact is, running two households is more expensive than one. Childcare based around a one parent family is more ex…

Whoever gets the kids as primary carer generally gets the house, which seems a reasonable accommodation to reduce the effect of divorce on them (minimises need for school change, etc). If men don't want primary custody (and most don't ask for it), who else is meant to live there with the kids except their mother? And why would any man then be looking to throw his own children out of their home, and refuse to support them? That's the sort of man - the one who wants to walk away from his children …

Well, we regulate commercial aircraft in this country so not really. We could go for the "pay full price then get the shit beaten out of us" beloved of Americans, but I prefer our system. Ryanair/EasyJet etc run on the system that you pay for every extra imaginable, so the basic rate is really cheap. And they have batches of prices - once the £10 seats are gone, they charge £20, then they charge £30 etc etc. Then they add on extras - £30 for hold luggage, £5 for a sandwich, £5 each to sit with t…

The problem with getting to Spain or Italy for £40-50 return is that it makes the price of flights to get to Latin America look absolutely extortionate. Apparently in Costa Rica, ziplining through the rainforest is the thing to do. Maybe someday!

Possibly. But. It depends on where you start from, though, and it depends on what level of comfort you're budgeting for. The traveler who gets to and around Europe on frugally booked flights and stays in €8-10 a night hostels, buys food at the supermarket and picks mainly free tourist attractions (e.g. standing outside Buckingham Palace), is going to spend a hell of a lot less than someone who flies on specific dates that they want to and stays in a specific standard of hotel and eats out every …

Fuck that shit. Eurostar's expensive. Get a Ryanair flight for €10 each way. But there's plenty of places I'd like to see where it would be cheaper from the US - Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica etc.

You know the Romans weren't hunter gatherers right? You can tell, because of the whacking great cities and the urbanisation.

Well biologically, nutrition, breastfeeding, demands on the female body of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle would be the things stopping us having kids every 9 months rather than women "gatekeeping" their bodies and waiting for The Special One. Having kids is literally the raison d'etre and it's worth - evolutionarily - the risk of death to pass on the genes. However, given the nature of humans as a highly adaptive species it's totally ridiculous to use those facts in an argument - we're not hunter…

As the name implies, r-selected species are those that place an emphasis on a high growth rate, and, typically exploit less-crowded ecological niches, and produce many offspring, each of which has a relatively low probability of surviving to adulthood (i.e., high r, low K).[8] A typical r species is the dandelion Taraxacum genus. By contrast, K-selected species display traits associated with living at densities close to carrying capacity, and typically are strong competitors in such crowded nich…

Well, it was originally conceived as an empirical count, but given that Kinsey had some pretty dodgy sampling methods the empirical part should be quietly ignored. (He decided that he didn't have enough working class men, iirc, so he decided to look where working class men congregate to boost his numbers - he chose a prison. Because obviously.)

Yeah, someone tried that on me once. I emotionally detached and left him not long after. He still says he wasn't cheating, but by that point emotionally (and by extension physically) investing in the dude just wasn't worth the drama he was causing in my life and I honestly was past the point of caring. I think it probably only works if either she's already dependent on you (e.g. shared mortgage, kids) and what she has invested in you is greater than the misery she's experiencing via staying with…

Define needs. Part of my needs is having my voice heard, and a say in my own life. A life where I couldn't make decisions without permission is not a life where my needs are being met. A relationship where my SO couldn't accept that my thoughts, feelings, and opinions were just as valid as his, or a relationship where mutual compromise and joint decisions were off the table, would not meet my needs. So by definition a captain/first mate dynamic, where I'm treated as a mere subordinate, automatic…

A six month relationship with a hard deadline is still more disposable than a possible 'forever'. Add that to generally acting more confident relative to the natives because culture (every American I've ever met IRL has seemed open and confident, because that's just not how Brits work)....

That's not really the point. Take 100 women. 40 of them are Christian. 30 have had an abortion at some point. If 60% of Christian women have had an abortion - 24 Christian women have had an abortion. If 60% of women who have had abortions are Christian - 18 Christian women have had abortions. Is not about questioning the faith of the women, it's more that mathematically those statements aren't the same thing.

Why on earth would a 40 year old want to be with a 20 year old? No pretty face is worth having to learn the lingo of the kids of today. 20 year olds haven't developed fully into adults so while she might be DTF for the pretty why would she relationship down? 20 year old guy is going to have less financial power than her, less relationship experience, less life experience, smaller worldview, less sexual experience - even if they can attempt to substitute enthusiasm for finesse, less of a shared b…
