It was originally meant to maintain safety, health, and community (such as "soldier's hate;" i.e. American soldiers hated nazis without ever having known one, but they were a threat, so they hated them). Basically hate was a way to keep yourself from being harmed or invaded. That's why if you are harmed severely by someone intentionally, the natural response is to hate them and to resent them.
