It used to be that there were girls guides and boy scouts. For quite some time in the UK, girls have been allowed (and encouraged) to join the scouts. But boys are still not allowed to join the guides. You'll note that the report is called 'Equality for Girls' and not just 'Equality for people'.

Scouts in the UK is a co-ed thing now. They still have guides which are girls only, but the scouts have members of both genders in the same troop doing the same activities at the same time. To the best of my knowledge, there are no more boy only scout troops in the UK.

In the uk, there are two types of taxis. There is the kind that you hail on the street, and the kind that you call and ask to take you from x to y. They are licensed differently. The pre-book ones cannot use bus lanes, cannot stop and pick you up at the side of the road, but they can work on a fixed fee basis - so x to t will cost 10 pounds no matter how long it takes to get there. I think in the USA the second kind is referred to as a car service as opposed to a taxi.

That's mostly an American problem though. In the civilised world, we have some employee protections, and can't be fired without cause. Sure, we can be skipped over for promotion, we can be let go in the next round of downsizing, but my boss can't just walk up to me and have me leave the building.

I'm not sure about that. Where I live, trying to play organised sport outside of a school / uni environment is HARD. There are no squash courts, no table tennis tables and no tennis courts within 45 minutes of my house that are open to anyone other than Uni students. That's enough to stop a lot of people.

In the UK, you can do pretty much anything you like with any picture that you can legally take. In the US, you'd need a model release form to make money off of the image of a recognisable person, and in some places like Germany, I believe you'd need explicit permission as well.

On what basis do you believe she was unaware that the police would investigate fully? The UK police are well known for treating all rape cases very seriously and performing thorough investigations. There have been dozens of cases in the UK press of women making false rape claims eventually getting caught. So she had no excuse to not know.

The inspector has to post anonymously because of far more than this post :) Although Ken Clarke has probably ruined his career by saying far less than Gadget has, Gadget has been running a very aggressive media campaign against senior police officers for a number of years now. I know in the UK there is a real problem with charging on domestic abuse cases. If the accuser suddenly refuses to testify "'e loves me, really 'e does!" then the CPS will often either refuse to bring a case, or drop a case that is in progress. With an accuser prepared to testify, it's often a "he said, she said" issue.
