Well said. I will say someone has a really great idea in this thread to give all employees a number of sick days each month with the option of selling them back to the company. I'm not against making it easier to take a time off for anyone that needs it, but I am against giving to one class of employees and not all classes of employees.

Some of the posts on this sub are quite unfair, but others are legitimate concerns. This particular post was focusing on the effects on women, not undermining their contributions in the slightest. In fact, it's fair to say that because women are working and managing the home, and having children, and doing plenty of other things, they contribute much more to the household than men. It would seem to be but wouldn't it be a reasonable accommodation? I think it's safe to say that no man has ever felt the pains of menstruation no mater how extreme. However, half the population has. Of half the population was to think it's a reasonable accommodation, wouldn't be worth considering? I'm playing devils advocate here, but it's obvious that some woman have pain or discomfort that no male at birth has ever felt.

Employers would still be held accountable for violation of workplace discrimination laws. I would imagine watch dog groups would be ready to pounce on any suit against an employer that want hiring a protected class of employees. In that regard, I doubt sexual discrimination in hiring practices would change very much.

My wife appreciates my opinion even if she doesn't agree with it. She is the best wife I could hope for. As for pre or post menopausal, I doubt it would matter. Employees have a right to privacy with regards to their health. An employer requiring proof would not go over well. With that in mind, it would be even more difficult with transgender men and women.

Perhaps some see freedom in the requirement to labor and strive for success. I don't know if it's feminism specifically that caused it, but I do feel women have lost in a sense that, success or no success, they are enslaved by capitalism now as well. Maybe in the past many were essentially enslaved with gender roles in the household, but I would think most had more freedom to pursue what makes them happy than they do now. They absolutely would. In the discussion with my wife, I asked if she would take days off even when they weren't needed and she said she would. No judgement, I've taken sick days when I wasn't sick. Modern medicine really doesn't have a good way of objectively confirming a level of pain. They can see blood pressure, respiratory rates, white blood cell counts, etc., but they can't be certain it's pain that causes it because pain is subjective. I appreciate your disagreement with my general premise. I do not have studies or research to back this up. It was intended to be more of an opinion than statement of fact. My opinion or hypothesis is that it is a biologically driven impulse, rather than a societal or nurtured value.

It doesn't stop companies from hiring women when they know maternity leave is always possible. Even if they don't have to pay for the leave, they're out of a worker for several weeks.

Really the best and easiest way of handling it. I had considered extra sick days for all, but not how to even the field for those who didn't use them. The thought of a sell back option fixes it all. The sell back would have to be an option that could be something you could exercise at anytime to avoid complaints of inflation or withholding pay. I could be on board with this option.

What about reasonable accommodations though? Some women have debilitating discomfort just as some people have debilitating migraines. Wouldn't it make sense to give that accommodation if there was a way to balance the benefits with males in the workforce? The only thing I could think of was to add days to retirement withdrawal that were taken to accommodate the gender specific time off (or sick days taken by any gender). This assumes a system for retirement is in place.

Very well said. I was going to address protectionism as well, but it wasn't really relevant to PTO. I think the opportunity and ability to protect is withering away as well. Very, very good thought! I'm struggling to understand why we make distinctions like those so often anyway. There are countless limiting factors for everyone, whether it's that you were born black, born poor, or born to a non-supportive family. There are certainly incidences where racism and sexism still occur in our society but I'm under the impression that those are isolated incidences.
