If you noticed, this is in the 'Gulf Times'. So for all you know it's a desi couple living in Oman or some place where 498A wouldn't apply. And maybe the lady is dumb and non-conniving.

Yea being a scientist and pissing on data driven observational studies isn't a good look. Found the article I was thinking of. For better or worse, diversity policies are in practice across companies and universities so take your protest to your employer. https://hbr.org/2019/02/research-when-gender-diversity-makes-firms-more-productive

Looking at a country level is a narrow definition of diversity. It ignores gender completely. My limited point being, that there is some logic to forced diversity in workplace and universities as it leads to better outcomes. This would suggest it isn't "insanity"

But the proposed solution is insanity But this is not insanity. Companies willingly skip the best candidate in favour of diversity. Universities, especially business schools do this as well. This is based on studies that show diverse teams overall produce more effective results. It has something to do with less group think. Whether this applies in the orchestra setting, I'm not sure, but I'd want to read the arguements presented in the NYT article once. Edit: this article explains it better than…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
