My point was rather that a small, even if statistically significant, difference in average is not really that informative when variance within group is much much larger. It could be that median is actually higher, but a couple of really unhappy dudes screw up the average.

Another way to interpret that chart is that men are 5-10 years ahead of women for feeling miserable. Also, that effect doesn't seem too big. There are no standard deviation bars on there, but usually in these kinds of comparisons the intra group variance vastly overshadows inter group variance.
