it probably doesn't matter so long as the partner doesn't shove it down the other person's throat and the affiliation doesn't create a fundamental ethical conflict.
It seems like they were trying to say that the person's character is more important than their resume. If someone is a Navy SEAL and has a strong, resilient character that's fine, but they wouldn't date them solely because they were a Navy SEAL.
