From the study: Data and respondents. Data were drawn from the General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS is the U.S. national probability survey of non-institutionalized adults, administered most years since 1972 by the National Opinion Research Center and available through the Interuniversity Consortium of Political and Social Research (Davis & Smith, 2006). We included data for the year 1996, a year that included survey items related to our predictor and criterion variables. Specifically, we includ…

(1) Do you agree that any additional casualty avoided in a war is desirable? A simple yes or no will suffice. (2) Do you believe that the usefulness of war participation is strictly additive and invariant; that is, do you believe each individual person added to a war effort, no matter their role and no matter the composition or size of the extant war effort, adds an equivalent unit of productivity to the war effort? If yes to the first and no to the second, you can pretty straightforwardly concl…

Of course, if there is a minimum satisficing level of casualties we can inflict, and it so happens that the war machine (and hence casualties) at the time was, as an operation of law, male: okay. My point was merely that additional casualties of war avoided is a good thing, no matter the gender makeup of those casualties avoided. It's as modest a claim as that.

I agree. So we can go by recent statistics and even compensate by an order of magnitude, and provide a 10:1 ratio (instead of a 99:1 as DoJ statistics indicate) men:women "don't rape" posters. This one addresses both male and female victims, though not males victimized by females. Though they are, by all accounts, a very slim minority, each person is co-equal in importance with each other person, no matter who has hurt them.

It's okay to be personally insulted by them. Life is full of insult. Every day hipsters are an affront to my every sensibility. As are a million other kinds of people who I will not specify because it would not be polite, but anyway. That's fine. What I think reasonable people can disagree about is the connotation of the posters. I hope that what I've advocated in this thread is my position on them: that they're generally well-intentioned, innocuous, don't carry the implication that all men are …

No. I'm saying that there will be situations in which a woman is, necessarily, at a power disadvantage. Brute fact about the world. I'm not saying that she's not responsible enough to make wise decisions. A woman should always try to prevent her own rape, and act vigilantly to ensure that she's done what she reasonably can. But there will be times when men and women are alone, and, unless the woman is a Krav Maga practitioner or something, the man is going to have power over her. It is in these …

What the fuck are you talking about? I would be more concerned about the fate of two men than her. Are you capable of holding these two completely consistent things in your head simultaneously? (1) It's good when a woman is not maimed or killed. (2) That it is good when a woman is not maimed or killed does not mean that men don't matter.

It's hardly worth pointing out, but this point of view wouldn't mean that at all.

"Men can stop rape", followed by every day situations where, surprise surprise, they don't rape! (wonderful right). So, this implies that all men are rapists (even though they don't rape) how? Agency? Not sure if I'm following. Nevermind. Don't want to argue this particular point. It's quite clear as the number of rapes hasn't diminished over time, which they would if those campaigns had any effect. That isn't true. There are too many uncontrolled variable to conclude that. It may (quite plausib…

For now it makes the statement that all men are rapists with an insatiable desire to rape that need to be constantly told that rape is wrong. It really doesn't say that, though. It says that the strong choice (and men are presented with such choices) is to choose to abstain rather than to victimize. It's not presupposing that you're going to rape. It's saying: "Hey man, I know that you occasionally have a choice to make when a woman in your life will be vulnerable to you. There's a good choice t…

Because I'm glad that as few women as practicable were maimed or killed during WWII, that means I have no empathy for men? Can you explain how you've concluded that?

No. Obviously not. That's not what's implied.

These posters imply that all men are rapists. Can you tell me how? It certainly doesn't seem that way to me, at all. And I'm a dude who looks for reasons to be critical of shit. It's not like you chose to become one, you're either one or you're not. Do you deny that there is some agency involved in rape? We may just be talking past one another. In fact, all anti-rape campaigns have shown to have no effect at all. As though such a thing could be shown, I will nevertheless have to ask: link?

You would have women mangled and dead in the name of equality? If they didn't have to fight, bleed, and die because of benevolent sexism, good.

We should be glad Geraldine could avoid such a fate.

Why don't they make it roughly proportional? How about one poster targeted at women to tell them not to rape, for every 10-100 targeted at men telling them not to rape? (The 10 figure assuming that the social stigma against reporting rape by a female offender would lower the reported incidents by roughly an order of magnitude from the actual incidents.)

Perhaps this is why the categorical imperative has been swept into the dustbin of philosophical history where it belongs. Just kidding. It's there for different reasons.

How is this "incorrect"? Presumably we wouldn't object (and rightly so) to the few awareness posters here-and-there that manage to slip through the cracks in the PC perimeter that advise women to make smart decisions and not to get blackout drunk and go home with a stranger. We also wouldn't object, would we, to the assertion that the overwhelming majority of rapists are men. So why are we objecting to a campaign reminding us, hey, men's volition has a big role to play in rape. Maybe at the marg…
