The most useful lesson seems to be that I should be occupied / busy enough with my own shit that I completely minimize this type of situation before it even happens - the examples in /r/GargantuaBlarg29 's post jumped out at me - at the point where I'm frequently in a position where I have nothing more important happening than to perform the task, I've already failed.

In the example I am reaching the bottom of the stairs where the refrigerator is located. I agree that there is a substantial difference between 2 steps and a flight of stairs, there's no way I would climb back up to deliver something. The context is what you outlined in the second paragraph, where I'm right there.

Thanks to all for the replies. Very interesting how polarizing the question seems. #1 upvoted response right now is "do it if it's reasonable." #2 upvoted a couple points behind is "Say no, and for no good reason." We can debate optimal play but my takeaway is that in the grand scheme it's a pretty small question and won't make or break you (within the strong confines of the question's context at least).
