I sorta get their point but it does have a glaring flaw like you’ve pointed out. By being yourself you should be less awkward and more in the present moment since you aren’t pretending to be someone you arent. However because of the sheer amount of different personalities and perspectives that come from different upbringing/culture/life experiences, “being yourself” leads to vastly different results. Telling someone to just “be themselves” comes off as a lazy platitude.
