When my ex hit me the first time, it was just punching me in the chest -- not anything that was in danger of causing any real harm. But I told her very clearly that physical violence was not an acceptable line to cross; not for me, not for her, not ever. She later almost broke my hand throwing her full weight into a door I was trying to open to get some space from verbal abuse. I managed to extricate myself from that situation without physically restraining her, but I was lucky. All my lawyer ha…

I like the phrase "sitcom job". "Sitcom husband" and "sitcom wife" roles are factors too; my ex was raised on a steady diet of classic sitcoms which may or may not have contributed to her inability to see when she was in the wrong.

I think it's important to distinguish between the "left wing" that is driven by liberal values, and the "left wing" that is driven by various flavors of Critical Theory/Critical Social Justice, because while they may share some language and address some of the same problems, words on either side of that divide can mean different things, and often the solutions proposed are diametrically opposed. This sub tends towards the liberal left, as opposed to, say, MensLib which is solidly in the Critical…

This is an incredibly insightful take; thank you for sharing!

The language of "lived experience" is derived from an aspect of Critical Theory called "Standpoint Epistemology" which, like most ideas so derived, is wholly bullshit.

Thank you for this! I got a milder dose than many, but definitely had to do a lot of work dismantling the harmful views of my own sexuality I absorbed growing up. I'm still uncomfortable initiating sex with my wife, despite knowing intellectually that she really wants me to.

How is thinking of women as less capable than men the not sexist read?

Darkhorse Podcast is great! Bret and Heather are both so intelligent and thoughtful; just listening to their musings for an hour is so engaging.

This is the second "Joe Rogan bad" article I've seen this week, the first one saying he was dangerous for giving a platform to Abigail Shrier, a journalist who wrote a book on the recent surge of trans teenagers. It offered up select quotes showing how awful his take on trans kids is, how he's making a tough situation for them worse, and how his dangerous show is going to push kids to suicide. Then I watched the episode in question. Much of what the article presented was the exact opposite of wh…

Do you have any actual numbers to discuss?

Looking at the chart at the end of the article, the disconnect between the left and right sides is interesting. The boys in the study were both more likely to identify abusive actions directed towards them, and more likely to confess to abusive actions themselves. It doesn't appear to separate out same-sex relationships, but making the (probably safe) assumption that the majority of the relationships in question were heterosexual, it makes sense that the girls' reports of receiving abuse in each…

I'm glad you re-posted over here, /u/EnIdiot; I had the same takeaway from the film, but could not have put it as eloquently. I saw the comment section when it first went up in MensLib; what a shitshow.

I've read a lot of concerning stats about male victims of DV, but never heard the claim that more men are killed by DV than women; do you have a source on that?

My first thought was, I don't really know anything about any of you, so how can I complement you? And then I noticed your username; "u/Quetzalkoalas" is fabulous! I'm going to have visions of majestic, winged Koalas soaring through my mind all morning; thank you for that.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
