Spurlock got wind the shit was going to hit the fan due to his behaviour. So he got 'ahead of the story' and made a martyr of himself. Like you, I read his statement, cringed a bit, then wondered what was up. My conclusion was that this is pre-emptive damage control. It’s a classic PR move called ‘getting in front of the story’.
