But what I would say is that by being good masculine role models we can raise our boys to be empowered enough to recognize they deserve better than shitty women and to not fall victim to that gaslighting and abuse. That’s how we hold them accountable. Unfortunately we will never have a commercial that addresses that women do this. It’s unfortunate but it’s true. My friends and I are absolutely comfortable talking to one another and I think most men are comfortable talking one-on-one. I still find myself holding things in instead of telling my wife what’s bothering me because I’m ashamed or should be tough for the both of us and I have to realize that’s part of the problem. My family has a huge background in law enforcement and in a lot of precincts and environments you get teased and shamed for seeking counseling for issues on ptsd symptoms or depression. Of course a lack of masculinity is a problem and not having a strong male figure is a problem, especially for young boys. But toxic masculinity is a problem too. They’re two separate things. You can be masculine and strong and not have toxic attitudes. As men we tell each other to not express our feelings because it’s not manly. It’s one of many reasons men are killing themselves.
