I'm not saying never approach. What I am saying is that a lot of the time we just want to go about our day like anyone else. It's all about situational awareness and not being creepy. It's also got a lot to do with taking no for an answer and being respectful. I've been cursed at, insulted, had a drink thrown on me, and even been grabbed at, just for saying 'no.' As a result, cold approaches make me super nervous because I'm always wondering what will happen when I turn the guy down.

Take it from an actual woman -- yes, a lot of the time we do mind.

When someone says "don't touch me," even if they don't use those exact words, they aren't secretly signalling you to keep trying. They want you not to touch them. This goes for someone of either gender, but women especially are constantly having to ward off unwanted contact. If you are lucky enough to be given another chance, keep your hands to yourself unless she tells you otherwise.

By 'screwed it,' did you mean "showed her that you don't respect her boundaries'? Because that's exactly what you did.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. Ngl, it never occurred to me that she might not be American. Sorry about that.

In that case, you did the right thing by calling her out.

I don't think she was necessarily making fun of anyone. A lot of people miss the sound of familiar speech when they're up North. Her comment doesn't seem like it was aimed at anyone's lack of education; she seems to me like she was glad to be back in the SE.

I wasn't trying to say that it was on that level, and I do understand that there's a big difference. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I'm still looking at things from a skewed perspective. Being in the closet for 20 odd years apparently fucks up your ideas about how relationships and sex should work.

I've actually heard of that before, but it always seemed kind of....I don't know. Not predatory, exactly, but in that ballpark. Then again, some of that is almost certainly a conditioned response based on the notion that women should be passive. I've never in my life actually tried to attract someone. I've only dated guys, and then only guys who pursued me. And now, at 36, when I talk to a woman I am attracted to, it's suddenly unbearably awkward.

I'm going to hate myself for even typing this, but do you mean 'git' like 'git out'? I'm kidding, of course, but I'd have lost my Official Southerner card if I'd let that one slip by me, and massively disappointed my grandfather. All jokes aside, I'm glad you're happy. I think I'd be miserable, but then, you'd probably hate being married to my career lol. I don't know a lot about Orthodox Judaism, and less about the Haredi; can you work outside the home if you want?

Are you happy? If you could have chosen another way, without disappointing anyone, or if you could leave him now without doing the same, would you?

I should have looked at your username first lol. I might have guessed it. (I'm Jewish too, but my religious upbringing was....lacking.) You mentioned that you turned down one prospective husband because he had left your community. Wouldn't that have kept your family from wanting you to marry him anyway? You said you'd only met him an hour before your wedding. Is that typical? What if you'd disliked him when you met? Would you still have been allowed to refuse him, even that late in the process?

That last fact doesn't surprise me a bit. I see a lot (relatively) of suicides in my line of work, and it's always seemed to me that people kill themselces largely because they don't fit where they've been told to go/with who they're supposed to be. It's a measure of taking back control. It's such a devastating act for everybody who's left behind, and a lot of the time grieving family members will yell and scream at me when I tell them that the deceased took their own life. I don't blame them. H…

Oh, no, sorry! That was poorly phrased on my part. I absolutely agree that the walnuts etc are good ideas and not punishment. My fault; sorry.

Those sound like good ones. On a different tack, my mom used to punish us by making us pick a bucket of rocks out of the garden. Getting the wiggles out (love that phrase btw) is different, and I agree that it shouldn't be about punishment. 5 year olds have excess energy, especially little boys. The last thing you want to do is to try to suppress that part of him. Edited for clarity.

When my brother (also an only boy) got too rowdy, my mom would always send him outside to run a lap or two around the house (distance increased with age). To make it fun, she would time it for him, and even made a little chart with stickers that showed his times. He ended up running track and cross-country in highschool, and did really well (which made Basic Training much easier). He still runs every day, and is actually planning on running his first marathon this year. The other thing that help…

I'm so sorry for your loss, but glad you got to have him. I get it, too, because my grandfather was my only father figure for the last half of my childhood and my entire adulthood. (I'm just now beginning to talk to and see my dad again.) Right now he's in treatment for esophageal cancer, and I'm so afraid that I'm going to lose him. He's 83, and the survival rate for esophageal cancer is only 15% after 5 years. Reading your comment reminded me that I need to make the time to go see him before I…

I went almost 15 years without speaking to my dad. The divorce was ugly. Now he's coming to see me. The last time we talked, he said that I'd always be his little girl. It legit made me cry. I wish I could get those 15 years back. Guess I'll just have to make up for it over the next 15. I missed him so much.

There's a big difference between being confident and being 'tough', and again, I'm much more blunt online than I am irl, largely because it's hard to convey tone and body language through text. Irl, I'm careful not to come across as even slightly aggressive unless I'm dealing with a suspect and/or the situation requires it. Online, I don't have to be as patient or as professional, especially when people decide to make assumptions and rude remarks. There are ways to offer advice that don't includ…

How much space are you working with? There are some animals that don't require that much. I'm specifically thinking of rabbits (in hutches) and chickens (in a fenced-in area). Both are great to eat, and can also be bred for a profit. Chickens obviously also provide eggs (and there is no comparison between a farm-fresh egg and one from a carton) which can also be sold as well as eaten. Do you have an herb garden? Those are great too, and since not everybody bothers with them, you can trade them r…

See, and this is what my grandmother has said my whole life. She's always trying to get me to wear makeup for more than just court, and while she knows she's just as good as my grandfather, she's also very feminine. She's always well-dressed, makeup perfect, hair done, even if she's only going to the little store at the end of their dirt road. She's (still!) beautiful at 83. She's gracious and charming and every inch a lady, in all senses of the word. My grandfather worships the ground she walks…

See, that makes sense to me. I mean, I know full well that I can handle myself, but if my SO were to say something like that, I would be happy to comply and pleased that he cares. Can you give me an example of a mistake you ignored? Finding a big guy is probably key. I like the feeling of being protected, and that's hard for me to achieve with a guy who's shorter than I am, or even the same height. I think it might also make me more likely to follow his lead, even if only subconsciously. My job …

What does that mean, though? Does that mean that they're better than we are, or just different? I'm not trying to be difficult; I'm trying to understand.

I actually don't come across that way, even at work. I did when I was younger, at first because the Army encourages it, and then because I was still working patrol and the attitude helped me get taken seriously. Even then, I had to work at it, and I always left it on the job. In reality, I'm not very confrontational, and that actually makes me better at working homicide, which is what I do now. (It's a cliche, but my partner's the 'bad cop.') I was simply being frank. It's pretty stupid to ask f…

The fighting thing is less of an issue these days, thankfully. Being a cop is always dangerous, but being a homicide investigator is much safer than being on the street. I would like a family, and while I'd be willing to take time off, there's no way I could give up my job. It's the biggest part of who I am. I already dread the idea of retirement, lol. I don't really know if I'm pretty, although I've been told that I am on occasion. (I never know if they mean it.) I don't think I'm ugly, though …

Thank you. I really appreciate the thought you put into your answer, and you made some good points. I will say, though, that in my mom's defense, her version of feminism is more "everybody's equal" than "men are scum." Her multiple marriages seem to stem more from fidelity issues on her part -- something I didn't know until very recently, and that really upsets me. Honestly, that was the catalyst for my current concerns. I came across an red pill blog not long after I found out, and the message …

Thank you for the advice -- especially the advice to date someone in my own profession. I've noticed that it can be kind of emasculating for a man in a regular job to date a woman who carries a gun for a living. I lost the last guy I really cared for after getting into a physical altercation with a male suspect. I came home with two black eyes, a broken nose, a split lip, and missing a chunk of hair that was big enough to necessitate a trip to the hairdresser. The guys I work with thought it was…

That's really awesome. When I was a kid, my parents fed us almost 100% from our own garden/property, and what they couldn't get there, they swapped for with neighbors. (I grew up in possibly the most rural part of the Eastern US and almost all of our neighbors farmed.) My dad killed 4 deer each year. We'd trade one to one neighbor for half of a cow, a second for milk, and eat the third and fourth ourselves. As a result, my sisters and I are disgustingly healthy. None of us have ever had any majo…
