If it isn't "life without the possibility of parole" then a sentence of "life" usually means you are eligible for parole around 20 years. If there is a 30 year sentence set consecutively (vice a multiple charge concurrent sentence) then you must serve at least the minimum of the time on the 30 before being eligible for parole.
