It’s fine if you never read deep stuff, though, and it’s not something a man should have a judgment on absent something deeply amoral or pornographic. Plenty of women never read at all and still make wonderful wives and mothers. Don’t inhabit that frame where you feel like you have to justify an innocuous reading choice.

You are allowed to hold the boundary on your treatment, but with men it’s not always direct communication that they hear from women. You could start by praising him for whatever he does that you think is worthy, and see how he responds to that. Keep it light and don’t lay it on thick, but try introducing it once or twice a week as the occasion arises. Second, if you want to continue on in the relationship or see if you can change the dynamic, you can’t take his nagging of you personally or serio…

Hmm. That would personally give me pause. I think you would have to ask yourself if you think he could communicate and work it out with you. He is on the older side so that makes it tough that he is going to leave his frame of women that he has from his mother. It is interesting that you have a past with abusive gaslighting men and he has a past with a devouring mother he resents. It seems to me like you are trying to move past your patterns, but now you are again with a man who repeats that pat…

That’s interesting that he got to 47 without a previous marriage. My assumption is that he is exploring a shadow side of anxieties and questions that marriage poses to him since your engagement. Perhaps there are some fears there - what was his own parents’ marriage like?

You are almost bound to pick the wrong man if you try to use marriage as an exit strategy in your situation. You have a long way to go to undo the bad imprinting you have for men that you received from your father. The absolute last thing you want is to get married right now and have decades of being tied to another abusive man with children in the picture.

Was he married before? How long have you two been engaged?

You have to understand: men are not socially and emotionally wired like we are. Female infants from months old can detect emotions in human faces with astonishing accuracy relative to male infants. That gap only widens with age. The upper half of the bell curve men are fantastic at drive, accomplishment, getting things done. Navigating the nuances of social behavior like “I need to make sure we get to the party on time so she’s not upset” is a lot more complex for them than you would think. You …

Also consider religious communities, joining a church, etc. As for vetting you want to find a man who loves you and will treat you well and be compatible with your life goals (travel, children, family, whatever it is). Don’t be afraid to “thank u next” if he doesn’t show your top desired traits (competence, kindness, intellectualism, whatever it is). If you are interested in having children you have a responsibility to look after yourself and never let a man string you along.

You just haven’t found your market yet. Consider moving to San Francisco Bay Area and join the social scene there. You are clearly intelligent and well-spoken. An autistic man would love you. There are men in SF with bounties on wives. Alternatively, look at dating older professional men as well (35-40) but vet them heavily and be willing to move on quickly without intimacy so you achieve your relationship goals.

At 8 months you could sleep train your baby if you felt comfortable doing that and haven’t done so already. Are you nursing still, is that the issue? While it would be great if he pitched in and supported you, and ideal, because he works and you are a SAHM it’s a little more reasonable to expect him to get sleep. EDIT: to the commenter who called me insane for suggesting nursing was an issue, it’s obviously an issue, as well as a safety risk if she is driving, if she is chronically sleep-deprive…

Two year timeline for engagement at age 29 & 39? Do you want children?

If he was the type of man to do this to you, would he have waited 18 months for sex? Probably not… you would have gotten out of this sooner and with your heart less broken. The advantage of restricting sexual access to at least engagement and ideally marriage is that weak men get vetted out and your attachment is lessened. I am sorry for you; you didn’t deserve this.

If you are feeling this way just five months in, it’s not going to improve at all. At 24, if your relationship goals are to get married and have children, I would not waste a minute more.

About how old are you? What are your relationship goals generally and what does that timeline look like? You seem like you’re allowing yourself to become far too emotionally attached too early on in getting to know a man. That’s setting you up for disappointment and emotional pain when all these men are doing you a favor by letting you know they’re not worthy of you. As a woman, you are the selector and you need to be far more discriminating and careful with your attachments. Your attachments ar…

Move on. If he is not escalating to an in-person meeting after a week of chatting, there is no reason to be his text buddy. You want a man with more motive for you than that.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
