The order of operations here isn't the issue. What we are arguing about here is what is the question: (20/5) * (2 * 2) or 20/(5 * 2 * 2). The formatting convention used for the question above is 20/(5 * 2 * 2) which means the answer is 1. The parenthesis are actually redundant: 5(2 * 2) == 5 * 2 * 2 so why use the parenthesis? I agree with others in this thread that this is poorly formed. If the question was written as 20/5 * 2 * 2 I don't think that anyone would have considered that the answer …

I'm not sure if this helps to clarify, but addition and subtraction are not commutative: a-b != b-a. This is because the operator sits in between two numbers who own their sign. So, whether a or b is +ve or -ve doesn't matter: a - (-b) != -b - (+a).

That was the case in this instance - it didn't make any difference. There was a case here in the UK where a guy walked past a woman as he passed through a tube station. She said that he got his hand up her skirt and "assaulted her". In a crowded tube station, that is impossible. In addition there is tons of CCTV.
