removing themselves from the (at least heterosexual) dating pool No, it’s like people who wish they were vegetarian, but just can’t give up meat. These women have not renounced dating completely. Rather, they haunt dating apps and post ridicule of the men they come across. In other words, they are still gloomily swiping right on attractive guys. It’s closely related to the dominant mindset at “Female Dating Strategy”: view all men with deep suspicion.

I hadn’t heard of this phenomenon either. But then, when I was growing up, my maternal grandparents were a regular presence in my life. Meanwhile, I rarely ever saw my paternal grandmother, and I never even met my paternal grandfather (who was alive until I was 17). Circumstances and geography played a role in that. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear evidence that, on the average, mothers rely on their own parents more than fathers do.

Years ago, I knew my girlfriend was going to break up with me when she started shaving her legs. Back then, I thought leg shaving was gross and unnecessary.

It’s a paradox, yes. Women are less likely to have the kind of odd fetishes some men have. Yet each woman seems to have a different set of criteria for judging attractiveness. One woman told me she is specifically attracted to men with relatively short, thick arms and legs and necks. Another woman is attracted to smelling beer on a guy’s breath. These things sound kind of like fetishes, but they’re somehow not understood that way.

It’s my view that masculinity is policed primarily by women. Feminism denounces masculinity, but individual women, even most feminists, reward masculine behavior, and prefer masculine men as partners. Meanwhile, men who grew up rejecting manliness, perhaps partly due to internalizing the (valid) feminist critique of historical male oppression, and perhaps partly due to being oppressed themselves by male bullies, are rejected by women as unmanly. It is surely a bewildering time to be a young man,…

Policing of women-only spaces is now irrevocably associated with TERFs. The Women’s Music Festival in Michigan, annual for many years, was restricted to only “born-women”. By about 2015, this was seen as unforgivably transphobic, and the event died.

Wouldn’t (roughly) every lonely man mean a lonely woman? According to the US Census, there are about three million “excess” single men under age 40, compared to the number of single women under age 40. Most of that is because many women in that age group are married to older men.

Looks and height certainly have power. Being over six feet myself, I’ve become very aware of the all-around unearned privileges accorded to tall men. But almost regardless of looks and height, a man can maximize his attractiveness to women by behaving in stereotypical/traditional/toxic masculine ways.

Contrary to some of the comments here, I know a woman who, as a child, was repeatedly raped by her sadistic brothers. This was in the 1970s/1980s. In response to her complaints, her mother would shrug and say “Boys will be boys, get used to it.”

pointing the finger not only at the Republican tradcons who pushed for this injustice, but also at the Democrats who stood by and let this happen when they had literally decades to enshrine abortion rights the proper way into law. I’ve been active in the Democratic Party for those same decades. We have not “stood by”! Given the filibuster, gerrymandering, the number of antiabortion politicians (including a small but critical number of Democrats), and deep apathy among pro-choice voters, there ha…

I’m a big, tall guy, and sometimes people who don’t know me find me intimidating or even threatening. Hence, especially at night, I am careful to keep my distance from solo strangers of all genders, to avoid causing unnecessary fear. This has been my practice for many years, since I was a teenager.

The 2010 US Census showed a surplus of 3.5 million single men under 40 (age 18 through 39), compared with the number of single women under 40. That works out to about eight single men for every seven single women. A lot of that disparity is caused by women under 40 marrying men over 40.

I generally agree, but I think it’s little more complicated than that. It’s a lot harder to be socially successful as a man than it used to be, with many failure modes, and masculinity being simultaneously condemned and rewarded. Online dating has expanded options for women, and greatly increased the importance of first-glance physical appearance and showmanship; a lot of men got left behind. The job market and the escalating cost of credentials has made it far harder for average guys to become …

When customers come into my workplace, we treat every one of them with courtesy and respect. Even the ones that are rude, dishonest, contemptuous, or completely unhinged. There are many people who I despise for various reasons, from Vladimir Putin to Anne Coulter and more. But if I were to encounter any one of them, especially in a workplace setting, I would treat them with the same courtesy and respect.

I don’t have the 2020 numbers yet, but the 2010 US Census showed a surplus of 3.5 million single men under 40, compared with the number of single women under 40. That’s about eight single men for every seven single women. (To clarify: age 18 through 39 inclusive.)

I’m guessing that what Warren was doing here is to try to get boomer feminists (who of course have a lot of political clout) to care about the student loan debt issue. Warren has always been focused on the financial interests of ordinary consumers vs. corporate/bank/institutions/government, and not in a gendered way that I’ve noticed. If she was speaking to a convention of people named Smith, she would point out that many thousands of Smiths are suffering from unfair debt burdens, so it should b…

Some very good points and arguments here, but there are a few points I take issue with. Here are a couple: (1) Reducing female mortality from the birth process is relatively easy to do. Reducing overall mortality rates is much more difficult. It is not unreasonable to see countries with relatively high female mortality as not having bothered to implement known ways (technology and policy) to reduce maternal mortality. It’s a very crude measure, sure, but it’s the kind of statistic that is availa…
