don't smile, they will smile at you first to break the ice. i've found that if you just keep a serious/mean mugging face, usually they will give you a smile or even just a subtle friendly gesture that is like an aborted smile or something and then look away or whatever.

My only advice would be to just expect this kind of flaky ass behavior, I know it's depressing as fuck but that's the reality. i went on a yoga vacation to mexico a couple years ago organized by a gym/yoga studio. the owners were a couple, they went on the trip. he owned a few gyms, but i guess turned over the attached yoga studio to his wife, who was a bikini/fitness model. anyway, went on a snorkeling trip the first day, she took her underwater camera.
