It's actually not a hen and egg situation. Yes, it is. A platform is not going to risk pissing off the customers who are currently paying, for the potential of picking up some customers who may or may not decide to part with their cash. There are platforms available which currently serve this need. Gab, Voat, et al, are currently running. Go spend your hard-earned cash over there, let the best platform win, I say. That's what freedom is.

It is exactly like that. Reddit is a business: they're in the business of making money. I pay for a Reddit subscription. So do others.
