This makes me sad to hear about LeBron, tbh. I heard he was a family man.

I mean this comment as an honest, nonargumentative take: I listened to the whole podcast today before I even saw the controversy in the sub and I came away with the same reaction as the OP of this comment thread (that Elle had said that men and women have to serve different roles; she used to believe that men lead and women follow, and I was personally unclear on where she had settled on that at the end of the pod). I think there was a lack of clarity about what Elle’s positions actually are as …

I think the point that the person you’re responding to was making wasn’t that we shouldn’t criticize religion (including Islam) when it works against women, but rather, that Elle is hypocritical for the way she discusses her experience with Islam and then pivots into espousing views that are similarly problematic/misogynistic but with a more Christian-bent. I’m sorry that you’ve experience your views being silenced. I’ve lived in a Muslim country (although I am not Muslim myself) and a libfem no…

This comment said it better than I've ever heard it put before. I'm saving this to reference later when I need a well-constructed argument.

even though the punctuation in those statements is exactly the same I still can clearly read the difference between "omg I'm pregnant!" (happy) and "omg I'm pregnant" (dismayed) ETA: to the person that replied to this comment with "stop mansplaining" ??? I am a woman lmao

I'm interested in joining other forums with FDS- and similarly minded women. I've heard Ovarit is a good platform (and someone offered to invite me, but I've lost the message :( ) and there's obviously the FDS website. Are there other forums that people recommend? I really miss gendercritical as a place for discussions, to give an idea of what I'm looking for.

I lived in a majority Muslim country for a bit as I was studying a language. Two people in my program (a man and a woman) started dating when we were there, and one night they were caught kissing in an alleyway and the man who caught them freaked the fuck out. He said he was calling the police, etc. We laughed about it, but in hindsight, it was scary -- they ran away and a few men chased them for a couple blocks until they were able to hide and the men couldn't find them. I can't imagine how muc…

That's definitely a tough situation. Your mom is lucky to have you modelling these behaviors, and it's amazing that you're able to work on both healing your own trauma of having a LV parent and help her start addressing her own traumas. I hope you both get to a place where you are loved, respected and appreciated at all times.

I don't want to tell you what to do, and you know your mom better than anyone on the internet, but I wonder if her hearing someone else say "You deserve better than that" would have an impact. Or, "I know you wouldn't want me to be with a man who treated me that way."

I know you mentioned some things in the post, but do you have recs for learning about investing? I’m getting a fucking phd so I know I’m smart but for some reason I feel so lost when it comes to finances.

That last line made me lol - get some cranberry juice and toast yourself sis, you did it! It's so hard to get away from manipulative partners, and I'm really proud of you.

Congrats on finishing your exams, OP! I'm sure that your 'victory meal' may be different from your normal eating habits, but I just wanted to remind you that incorporating some veggies and different sources of micronutrients are a great way to take care of your body and mind and should be part of a routine of self-care whenever feasible.

Thank you! Is there a particular way to get an invite code for Ovarit? I'll also check out Spinster.

If you don't mind PMing me, I'd love to know about some of those women-led sites.

It can definitely be really hard, but you're doing the work to self-reflect and grow from where you've been. Awareness is the key to doing better. Also, focusing on yourself and your growth will make you more confident in seeing and calling out toxicity.

Hey sis, there's a couple of things you said that I think are worth thinking about in more detail. I don't mean to act as though you haven't already thought of these things, but rather, to call them out in case it's helpful/validating. I don't believe my dad is a pedophile - he wouldn't actually pursue and have sex with a young woman. Being a pedophile means experiencing attraction to children, even if you don't act on it. It sounds like your dad did, or at the very least, he felt comfortable …
