At the one date mark you should know “where he stands on that”. It is not too terribly hard to ask about intentions during the getting-to-know-you, first-date, chit chat. “So Mr. First Date, what are you looking for when dating? Is it mostly for fun and companionship, or do you feel like you are ready for marriage, and therefore looking for “the one”? If you say this right up-front, before they even know you, hopefully they won’t be dense enough to think you are saying you want to marry them. If…

Me personally? I was raised in a loving, two-parent family, with an awesome daddy. I watched him take care of my mother and us kids, physically, financially, and emotionally. He isn’t perfect, but he is a fundamentally good person who treats others with respect and kindness. I feel very lucky for having him as a role-model. I also read “The Rules” like the Bible when it was published in 1995 (and I was 14). Their rules all made perfect sense to me, and I was ALL IN. Those concepts shaped my self…

People test relationships/the other partner by moving in together. They go into it with a “let’s see how this goes” attitude. It is typical that men want to live together instead of marrying because they are skittish about commitment and, therefore, more likely to call it quits when problems arise. There's very little upside to cohabitation for women who ultimately wish to marry. At the very least it will take up valuable time that could otherwise be spent dating marriage-minded men. How many of…

Hi. Thank you for your objective and informed opinion. I probably should elaborate a bit more about a few points you brought up. We grew up very middle class (birthday dinner at the Olive Garden was a big deal). My mom always had jobs, but never a career. She would have much preferred to stay home, but my dad’s career wouldn’t pay for any extras. My brother and I wanted/needed things: guess jeans (me), gymnastics classes (also me), insulin (my brother), outrageously priced auto insurance (also m…

Okay, but I didn’t say anything about “allowing [me] to work”, I said he “was happy for me to” blah blah. IMO there is a very big difference. A LVM feels insecure and makes snarky comments about you getting all fixed up to go to out to a professional happy hour, especially true if you are a SAHM and aren’t in the job market. A LVM complains that you can’t leave until after X is finished, or says you need to be home before Y. He sighs loudly when you leave and reminds you what time he has to get …

Since a lot of people are being critical about my post, and I forgot to mention the big things, (I gave lots of examples of little things), I wanted to share some more substantive examples: Despite him being a decade older, he never made me feel bad about wanting to wait a LONG time before trying to start a family. I didn’t realize I would want to wait, until I decided I wanted to go to law school — about three years after we got married. We started trying for kids when I was ready, and not a mo…

The “hah” was about when I watch my wedding video and see her seeing me. I was trying to just mention things which I thought related to the NYE story. Yes, the upgrade comment didn’t belong and could be seen as showing off. I thought him encouraging me when I wanted to go on a 21 day girls trip (this was before we had children) was showing of his emotional intelligence, but I can do better. So, a few things off the top of my head: I asked him a hypothetical “if you could push a button and somewh…

Wow. That’s harsh. “Big girl moves”? Why you mad, sis? My expectations about married people’s money was always that it was “their money” not his or hers. Him suggesting that I set my income (which in my state, at the time, was absolutely “common property,” trust me, IAAL), aside to use for whatever I wanted, seemed generous to me. Of course I had several bank accounts prior to his “permissive” one, my business account, my IOLTA, etc. Oh, and btw, I used some of that money to go on a 21 day trip …

Oh yeah, sorry I didn’t realize y’all wanted more info about her. She was married with two small kids when I met her. My husband had known her since college. He told me, because of course I asked, that they had slept together once, before she met her husband. He said it was “very drunk sex” and tbh he couldn’t really remember it that well. He just said they woke up the next morning, she asked if wanted breakfast tacos, he didn’t. He said they were able to move past it without too much awkwardnes…

Yess!! This brings me back. My original copy of The Rules was so underlined, highlighted, and dog-eared that it looked like most girls my ages’ bibles. I guess the comparison is fitting, since it became my bible too. I felt a profound loss when I loaned it to a very nice, but naive, co-worker in 2002. When she failed to return it, I kind of let it go because I was already engaged, and thought she could use it more than me anyhow. But oh how I miss my book! I’m still happily married, but I would …
