While I agree that experience is important, it's not everything. As you note, I was certainly one of the less social guys in my younger years. I've always felt that a guy should make his intentions fairly clear pretty early on. I don't really see the point in pretending. In fact it seems more manipulative for a guy to act like he just wants to be friends when he wants to be romantically involved. The way I see it, the dude is going to get his "in" with you, but it's not gonna lead anywhere because you will block him later on.
