Native English speaking Canadian here. We say sorry quite often (as per the stereotype) but I can't imagine I'd apologize to someone before I call them out on something. However I'll never be on a talk show so that's a completely different situation as well. I personally can't imagine that I'd say "I'm sorry but can you please not laugh about this male abuse case"?

He's scolding the audience about their behaviour and feels compelled to apologize while doing so, saying "I don’t want to upset anyone in the audience but"... what kind of world do we live in that he has to apologize for calling out people on bad behaviour?

I'm from Canada and would tend to agree, but I've had people tell me on numerous occasions that Asian people are somewhat at a disadvantage when they apply to Ivy League schools because of "reverse racism", where they have so many high performing applications from Asians, that they will in some cases look to increase the cultural diversity of the applicant pool by favoring people with other backgrounds, even if their marks are lower those of the remaining Asian.s

It's all practicality. When you know the odds aren't in your favour and that you'll likely get convicted, you may choose to plea guilty for a reduced sentence.
