Well now that this thread has veered off in a totally different direction, actually, I use Azure with CloudFlare in front, which is anything but “shitty”. There’s no compelling reason for me to use LetsEncrypt’s free SSL cert, but I fully support the idea of a full SSL web, so I’m glad the option exists for those who require a free certificate.

Well that’s why I picked companies that specialize in the use of encryption. But having said that, actually CloudFlare is another way to get free SSL and is pretty much set-and-forget. But still most companies will want to purchase their own certs, regardless of the theoretical benefits of an arbitrarily shorter duration. Maybe that trend will change in the future, who knows.

Yes I incorrectly said every month, but 90 days is the duration and 60 days is the recommended renewal interval. However, for a stolen cert, the difference between 90 days vs 365 days is pretty inconsequential practically speaking. It will be revoked as soon as it’s discovered, so any use of the stolen cert is likely to happen very quickly. Having just spot checked a few security-focused web sites (i.e. CloudFlare, LastPass, Sophos, etc) and all are using multi-year certificates.
