As an adult (31) son of a BPD mother I would also say this is basically a fact. I myself was BPD-ish but probably not qualifying for the formal DSM criteria, and it took years of therapy (in particular DBT -- look it up) in order to recover. And while I believe it is theoretically possible for a full-on BPD patient to be cured, it will probably never happen unless they themselves decide to go to therapy.
