I'm 23 and started working out at about 16/17, I got gains but never saw large progress until I got my diet in check. What you're saying is 100% true, I took it one step at a time as I got better. First, protein. What meals/food do my parents bring home that has protein, what should I have for breakfast, how can I hit 1g of protein a day, etc. From there I went on to finding the best foods calorie wise with protein, and so on.
