Don't bother engaging. Feeding trolls only encourages them.

Hate to say it, but you're sort of fucked. On paper, you're married 12 years, and courts care about paper. California considers 10+ years of marriage long-term when it comes to alimony. If you'd gotten formal separation at 7, even if you still lived together and never divorced, you would probably have it easier. I'm not a lawyer, and have never been divorced in California, but if she's willing to fight, I think you've got a tough road ahead of you.

Don't even get a joint tax return here. They got rid of that ages ago under the banner of female empowerment.

Not necessarily someone else. Young kids are exhausting, and sometimes exhaustion means people can't keep their mask up, and you get to see the real them. You could just be seeing who she really is when she doesn't have the energy to fake it.

How can marital expenses be maintained when you suddenly need to pay for additional lodging?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
