You are under a misconception yourself. Fat people do choose to be fat by and large. Thyroid conditions are relatively rare, and hypothyroidism rarer still. Gaining weight is simply a matter of eating more calories than you burn, and the fatter you are the more calories you have to eat just to maintain weight. It's a function of how much food you eat.

I do DIY repairs to my house and car. I build furniture and other woodworking projects. The main reason that I engage in these things is that I enjoy the projects. I'm good at them and come out with beautiful results. I work at an IT job all week this is my break from that. For some people it is very much a hobby.
